| Ilovethissite | 01-11-2012 09:07 AM | Tethering problem This morning, I tethered and tried to go on ebay and paypal, but I couldn't connect to my selling page, or even access paypal.com, but I could go on every other single site I could think of. Anyone know what the problem is. |
| seanws30 | 01-11-2012 09:58 AM | possibly a paypal/ebay problem. try again later
or the ip is blocked.
either way try again later |
| yotano211 | 01-11-2012 11:14 AM | Try again but using a new User Account in the computer. |
| Ilovethissite | 01-11-2012 12:30 PM | tried that, but it still does not work |
| Hercules | 01-11-2012 01:02 PM | Try a different browser |
| Ilovethissite | 01-11-2012 03:59 PM | I tried different user, ip, and also browser, but it still is not working. I can get onto ebay's front page, but when I click on selling, or anything else used to sell it cannot connect, although I can search for things. Also, paypal does not connect at all. I checked on amazon, and for some reason, some parts of that site is also not connecting. All other sites work though, so I am perplexed by this. |
| jbluntz | 01-11-2012 04:02 PM | What tethering app are you using? |
| yotano211 | 01-11-2012 07:24 PM | Oh yea, some tethering apps will not let the user on to websites that require logging into the website.
See if you can log into your email account or any other websites that require logging in. If you cant log in, then the app is your problem. I would switch it to something else, like wireless tether or Open Garden Wifi tether. Both problems are free and have no restrictions. But you would need to root your phone to have access to the phone kernal to install "Superuser" program.
If you don't want to root your phone or have problems how too, then I would suggest "easy tether pro". The free version will still work but doesn't log into "HTTPS" websites, ebay and paypal. You will need to pay $10 for the pro version but you can use it for any phone in the future after that. It works for Android and Iphone phones.
You just need your phone, a USB cable, and your computer. It works by the USB cable, not wifi. You have to install the program on your and each computer you use, also have the program install on your phone for it to work.
What I do is I have the computer program, "drivers", saved to my phone in case I would need to use another laptop. I install the program to the new laptop and I am good to go. |
| Ilovethissite | 01-11-2012 08:12 PM | I use pdanet, but the problem only occured today, before I used it and it worked flawlessly every single time, and I had not updated the app or anything. |
| yotano211 | 01-11-2012 08:18 PM | I think I found your problem. I got it from their website. I guess you have to pay to access HTTPS websites.
***Note: Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free. The only difference is that free edition blocks secure web sites.
This is common with many USB tethering programs, easy tether pro has the same deal. You can access any website for the first 7 days then after that your restricted. I guess you just installed that program on your phone and now the free trial is over, so time to pay up. |
| Ilovethissite | 01-11-2012 08:29 PM | awww dammit, thanks a lot for looking that up for me, I was thinking it was too good to be free forever... |
| yotano211 | 01-11-2012 08:40 PM | just switch to easy tether pro, use it for 7 days and switch back to the other problem or find another USB tethering program. In the end you might have to pay up for root the phone. |
| jbluntz | 01-11-2012 09:54 PM | I'm using tetherme, it's only $4.99 for the app in cydia, for jailbroken iphones. |

| lakeman | 01-12-2012 10:41 PM | $4.99 ain't nothing to Jbluntz!
I use MyWi which is a $19.99 app but I got it for free also. |
| jbluntz | 01-12-2012 10:59 PM | Yeah it's free if you have the right sources like biteyourapple, I think it is, but if not it's $4.99, not everyone's a wiz at what all's available in a jailbroken iphone, ecspecially if you're still fairly new to iphone, like myself. |
so dial up wasn't working out for you? |
| jbluntz | 01-13-2012 09:39 AM | Who needs dialup when you have free tethering? my iphone is faster then my comcast cable but of course didn't find out about it until recently. |

AT&T, Sprint and/or Verizon are not pulling down 20-40MBs like your standard cable modem should be doing. You'd be lucky to do just a couple MBs down on any iPhone. |
| jbluntz | 01-14-2012 03:17 AM | No with my iphone pages load in a flash, 5 bars all the time, with comcast it's like 2-3 bars takes twice as long to load pages. |
| yotano211 | 01-14-2012 03:46 AM | with cellphones it also depends how far are you from the nearest cell tower. i would think with those speeds you mr. jbluntz are right near one. |

| jbluntz | 01-14-2012 03:59 AM | It takes twice as long to load pages compared to using tetherme on my verizon iphone. |

A and EVDO Rev. 0 will never pull down remotely close to the same speeds, even if you are standing right next to the tower. So, this is why I am confused on what he means. |
| jbluntz | 01-14-2012 04:10 AM | Keep in mind I'm using tetherme, a jailbroken app, not the original iphone's personal hotspot, also my iphone is right next to my macbook, whereas the router is about 20 ft away, so that might have something to do with it. |
ask Red X about his comcast on speedtest.net is only pulling 0.88 mbps and I told him my iphone on speedtest.net is pulling 6mbps i think this is what blutz is talking about |
| Hercules | 01-14-2012 08:47 AM | I just tested Comcast, 8.86 upload Mbps, download 16.35 Mbps. |
| jbluntz | 01-14-2012 09:25 AM | I just tested mine 1.56 mbps download for comcast, 2.55 mbps download for iphone so yeah not twice as fast but still faster, I guess where you're at can make all the difference |
| Hercules | 01-14-2012 10:52 AM | I had problems with my service so I kept at the tech guy at Comcast to give me business speed....I don't know for sure if they gave it to me though...later I found out on my own that my router was dying. I bought a new one and WOW! |
| yotano211 | 01-15-2012 12:14 AM | wow, i am so jealous of you guys. i did a speedtest and i only got, 253kps download and 1.3mbps upload, my ping was 282ms, ouch. i am with virgin mobile. i guess my is so low cuz i use it to download utorrent things at night. |

You won't have access to Rev. A/Rev. B or WiMax. Vmob loves to claim that EVDO is 3G just like a lot of other cheaper companies and it pissed me off because it is not even close. |

I can't believe that's all you have available in your area. I can pull a solid 30+Mbps down ALL DAY from Comcast... |
| wonderwoman901 | 01-19-2012 04:49 PM | Damn I have an android should i just download a tethering app and do that instead of dealing with comcast? We just switched from at&t which made it very easy to change ips now we have comcast. It has been two weeks of hell because I havent had any success changing the ip so a customer rep bridged my modem today, I went into my router and changed the mac address around and it changed my ip finally. But it is the same ip on all my user accounts so I guess I will have to change my ip everytime i go to my ebay user account. Would tethering be a better option for me? |

Also, it's always good to have backup plans, so consider tethering, it's free, and easy as 123, if you need any help feel free to let me know. I have some good ones for you.
Are you using an Android phone? |

It's odd though, because for some reason I was still able to stream movies from Netflix, stream console games from OnLive, and these usually require 3mbps speed to run smoothly.
I tested t-mobile, and got 6mpbs DOWN, so it's DEFINITELY faster than MY Comcast at least. |
| unkown5454 | 01-20-2012 12:35 AM | |
| Red X | 01-20-2012 12:09 PM | I have the exact same thing, weird that my speed is so slow, even weirder that it streams movies from netflix, and games from OnLive FLAWLESSLY. |
| unkown5454 | 01-20-2012 03:49 PM | How are you testing it? |
| lhall5422 | 02-19-2012 03:14 AM | tethering FYI... I am using a rooted android with barnacle wifi tether.... Works great. airplane mode changes ip every time... Did i mention its FREE!!! | | All times are GMT -5. The time now is 05:10 AM. | |
