WARNING: Your eBay account may be deleted!

eBay are at last to do something that people have been asking for for years – free up some of the oldest eBay User Ids that haven’t been used for years.
eBay have sent out emails to users with dormant accounts saying “We noticed that you haven’t signed in to your eBay account for quite some time, and we’d like to invite you back to buy and sell again. eBay’s a great place to buy what you want, and sell what you have.“.
They go on to add “Unfortunately, since you haven’t used your eBay account for a while, it will be deleted if you don’t sign in within 30 days from the day this email was sent.”
I’ve never heard of eBay deleting an account before – even when eBay have closed accounts for Trust and Safety reasons the accounts and About Me pages have always remained live on the site.
What this means is that potentially some of the oldest eBay User ID’s from dormant accounts will become available to be re-registered at some time in the near future. If dormant account users don’t log in and their accounts are deleted then the User Ids could potentially become available again.
We don’t know how old the accounts are scheduled for deletion and we don’t know how long an account has to have been left unused before eBay consider it dormant and ready to be deleted. However if you have old accounts that you want to keep it’s worth signing in and possibly making a purchase on them to ensure they stay alive.
Is there a User ID that you’ve wanted for years for your business? If so you might just be able to grab it in a month or so if you still want it.

I saw this i thought it would be handy to some, From Now we have to log onto our stealth accounts more regularly to keep them alive :)

Interesting idea.

Good information. I think it will never apply to accounts which have been banned, just accounts which are dormant for a large stretch of time.

It might be a good idea to make a routine now for juggling accounts, keep some activity on them perhaps every 2 weeks at least.

I've just found 2 accounts that I had never used - one dates from 2003

It's only a buying account so far and it's a private account - not my usual at all - any hints on developing an old account like this?

I've changed the email address and I'm thinking a VCC on this and a new PP account - just to see what happens

Here is the relevant part of the story....

"What this means is that potentially some of the oldest eBay User ID’s from dormant accounts will become available to be re-registered at some time in the near future."

The key word being POTENTIALLY. I think this is speculation. Of course, it makes perfect sense that eBay would want to reach out to older customers who havent been there for awhile and remind them they still have an account. A certain amount of the customers contacted may become active users again.

What is less clear is that eBay will then allow those names remaining unused to be re-registered. It COULD happen, but it has not been announced. There are potential problems with this that eBay would have to deal with. So, I would say you can HOPE to get that cool username you always wanted, but I wouldn't COUNT on it.

Just found another one on an old laptop - looked in Firefox tools and there was thge log in and password

So I have 3 private accounts, 2003, 2006 and 2007
No Paypals attached
less than 10 feedback
I think just stick them in the nursery and simmer gently for a rainy day

Any ideas peeps?

Some casual browsing, buy a little here and there. Old accounts are hard to come by but will probably be fairly closely scrutinised if any activity suddenly starts.

This has been discussed quite frequently on the forum, and there's no need to hijack the thread either.

But yes, do like what the above poster stated. LOTS of browsing and buying activities over a reasonable period of time.

or wait and see if you get the email for the accounts, if you do i would say it looks less suspicious

FandangoKango 02-18-2012 07:58 AM

I wish they would delete banned account information.

they_screwed_me_too 03-20-2012 07:41 AM

GT ive just found one in the same state 20 feedback a few sales, paypal linked and was verified, i unfortunately cant remember the password for PP and the email address is no longer in use, nice little account if i can get around it (5 years old)

rsot 03-20-2012 09:31 AM

@they_screwed_me_too - why don't you set up the email again (if you remem THAT password), then do a password request from pp?

exranger 03-20-2012 02:58 PM

I posted my situation a little while ago, very similar! I am just doing some browsing, bid on a few things and lost, might win one later this week.

I too got that email!

Out of curiosity, what does user name really matter for anyway?

Its not like they would allows names that match real companies or anything.

I've been buying on eBay forever and I have never once cared about the users name. Unless it was "i-will-steal-from-you"

I think Jeff is right in assuming they are just rattling old accounts to try get some back active
