How to setup your own VPN Server

How to setup your own VPN server anywhere!
Before I start my tutorial I would like to say thank you to aspkin such a great ebook and website.

Using commercial VPN’s on eBay is always a risky business as many thousands of people could potentially be sharing an IP address with you.

The best way of getting around this is to create your own VPN SERVER. This guarantees you are the only person using the IP address and that eBay has not RED Flagged the IP address.

Believe it or not, it is no more expensive to create your own VPN than renting one from a company.

Total Cost: Between $5 - $20 per month depending on the location.
Difficulty: LOW
Time: 10mins

Step One: Get a VPS
Get a Linux XEN VPS with centOS (centos 5.4 is the best). A VPS is shortened for Virtual Private Server. It's not a whole machine (too costly!) but one portion of a machine. A 256 Ram VPS will be sufficient for setting up your VPN.

Pick your VPS service in the location you will be trading. E.g. if your selling on eBay USA select a VPS in the USA somewhere. (HINT: Make sure the VPS is within about 100 miles of the address registered on the eBay and PayPal account)

DO NOT BUY A VPS WITH ‘OPENVZ’ INSTEAD OF ‘XEN’….IT MAY BE CHEAPER BUT IT WONT WORK!

Step Two: Download Putty software

Putty is SSH software that allows you to log on to your remote VPS.
You can download putty at: PuTTY Download Page

Step Three: Log on to you VPS with putty
You will be issued with the following information from your VPS Provider:

VPS IP Address
SSH Username (normally ‘root’)
SSH Password

Open putty and type the ip address provided by your VPS provider into the ‘host name’ box and click ‘open’

A black MS Dos Style window will appear
Type Your SSH user name in and press enter
Type in your password and press enter (when you type your password no characters will display but your password is being captured….so don’t worry)

Step four: Install VPN Software
Type the following command line:
wget https://breakwall.net/promo/pptpd.sh

and press enter

then type in the following command line:
bash pptpd.sh

and press enter

you will then be issued with a VPN username and VPN password

Step Five: Connect to your VPN

Use the Ip address provided to you by your VPS as the Host name and the username and password provided in the Putty Window

Thanks for share Mearich and welcome.

I use VPS for Ebay and PP, I am not too technically minded so I generally opt for the Windows Server VPS. Windows server VPS are generally slow for surfing, plus they are more expensive than the others.

I will look into this, might pick your brains along the way

oompaloompa 03-30-2012 01:11 PM

how many ips you getting for the basic hosting price?

mearich 03-30-2012 02:54 PM

I currently get 5 with my VPS service and then it is only $0.50 per extra IP. But i limit the total ip's per VPS supplier to 10 as they all start with the same numbers.

why not setup your own VPN using VMWare? if you have some knowledge of UNIX you can spoof your IP to what ever you'd like... Plus the MAC will not be the same for each virtual machine... just my 2 cents =/

^thanks for sharing info

Thanks 'idol

Can you elaborate on this for the people with no knowledge of VMware?, hard to spoof the IP without Unix knowledge?

sax4 04-20-2012 02:45 PM

Mearich I have tried this, when the MSDOS window opens there is a green cursor that does not move when typing, not even for username. Any suggestions?

BubbleTea 04-30-2012 06:18 PM

Do these VPS and VMWare methods work for Mac OS?
Anything for Mac?

jrvs 05-02-2012 04:26 PM

Wow this is some next level stuff. Thank you for sharing. I will try this.

Where did you get them from?
Works on Macs?

sax4 06-19-2012 09:05 AM

Cloud next and Site5. I would imagine so

oompaloompa 06-19-2012 01:53 PM

trials cannot possibly be unique or non recycle ips though, right?

Well trial ip is same as one you pay for, as they take your card details to charge you as soon as trial is over.

Don't know too much about hosting, but I can say i've never had problems with the few that I have used.

soultrain 08-07-2012 04:29 PM

This looks like a good plan, and so I went through and carried out almost all of it. I have very little previous networking knowledge. I still have a few questions about the procedure:

1) There was talk in this thread of using VMWare to change/mask MAC addresses. I'm assuming that I don't have to worry about this? All I am trying to do is access EB through my VPN within my VPS. I am not trying to download and run any programs that would be able to acquire my MAC address. So, is it still something that we should be worried about? Or is it not completely necessary? (EDIT: I only plan on using this VPS for one unique 'identity' as well, so I'm not worried about mixing 'identities' by using the same VPS)

2) Assuming that the VMware is not completely necessary, I have completed the first 4 the steps outlined in the first post, steps 1-4. So, I am almost done. The problem is, I have no idea how to do step 5. It seems so simple, and I feel so stupid, but now that I have rented a VPS and set up my VPN using putty and have all my information ... how do I "connect" to the internet through my VPN? How am I able to begin physically "browsing" the Internet through the veil of my new IP address?

3) Once I begin browsing through my new IP address, will it make any difference if I create a unique Windows user (on Windows 7) to use when logged into the VPN, or will it not make a difference which user I am? I assume it will not make a difference.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!!! :thumb:

For Ebay, wouldn't it be easier to just setup user accounts on the computer and use a Dongle to change IPs? just a thought.

bansheezone 08-07-2012 05:14 PM

^ agree.

This isn't quite the setup I'm looking for. Essentially, I have 2 eBay accounts already. One is in my name and the other is in a friend's name. Right now, I log on to my account through my home computer, and then always have to drive to the library to use my friend's account.

What I am looking for is a setup whereby - using my laptop anywhere in the world - I can connect to the Internet through my VPN in my VPS, and the IP address that I am using will always be constant. I am going to be traveling a lot, so I want to be able to access my friend's ebay account (and my account) anywhere in the world by always being able to connect to the Internet through my VPN in my VPS. I hope this all makes sense.

It seems that I am very close to figuring this all out, I just need the final advice from somebody else. Can someone please help me out with the few questions that I asked earlier? Thanks.

BubbleTea 08-11-2012 02:19 AM

With regards to the first post, can I have multiple VPN IPs on one VPS?

moneyhustler88 08-13-2012 09:34 AM

hmmmm very interesting

I have never come across this. I will have a look into it and repost back....which provider are you using for the VPS?

mcmx 09-14-2012 08:58 PM

Would buying multiple $20 VPS's per month for each Stealth account work?

Asking this here since a lot of you seem to be knowledgable about VPS & VPN and that sort of stuff...I'm not very good with it.

I recently bought a Windows VPS with additional IPs but I couldn't get the IP to change to one of the 'additional' ones :( I thought I got it fixed, but I had to cancel and now I've only got a temporary solution.

You mean do this as a safe and at your own level of skill way?

You mean NOT face panic attacks because of chasing the flavor of the month way?

VERY wise thought too :thumb:

sax4 09-16-2012 08:39 AM

It would be if I was in my own country, and not in a country on EBay's shi* list :D

sax4 09-16-2012 08:40 AM

Thanks

But where do you get your clean ips from?

rsot 01-13-2013 09:25 AM

You contact the VPS/VPN service and hope that the IP has not been burned to the ground...many VPNs have been.

sudhiros 01-13-2013 10:19 AM

There is nothing called as "clean" IP. its all luck . . like shooting with a half filled revolver on your head . . the click has a bullet or not . . is all your luck !!
