Increase In Chargebacks

I suppose it is just a sign of the times, but I have had a huge increase in paypal cases where the buyer's bank rejects the paypal money request.

I currently have four cases over four accounts. I will be covered under the seller protection program as I have proof of postage / delivery on all items.

I assume this happens when the buyer has no money in their bank account and their back up source is the debit card for said bank account (or a maxed out credit card).

I've been selling on eBay for a good few years now and never experienced a paypal chargeback up until about six months ago. I've probably had about 15 or so since then. Thankfully haven't lost any as yet.

Anyone else getting a lot of this currently or is it just my items that are attracting the poor?

Thankfully no. Only ever had one in around 10 years but as you say a sign of the times.

Sad really

It probably is partially down to the product range that I sell. Item price is £2 to £30, no high price items at all.

Mine range £10 to £30 too so maybe your product as you say.

I've never heard of someone sending an e-check and having no money in their account but it somehow clears. Then they take the money back?!?

Are you sure this isn't someone challenging the charges on a credit card or bank account and then it gets refunded?

Anywho, luckily I haven't had of those. However, I have heard of scams on paypal like this from other people on other forums. It really stinks and I guess I've just been lucky.

Nope. They are instant payments. All the ones I've had haven't been scammers as the buyers all responded to my emails with excuses like "they were having bank problems" and how sorry they were. All assisted with the claims by contacting pp and confirming they received the items.

PM me your guess

MOre scammers are trolling ebay and other sites. I sold on amazon for almost 2 years before I got my first one. they both came on the last week of when you can usually file a chargeback which is usually 3 months on most cards.

Not even sure how amazon deals with those against your metrics

Callidus 04-02-2012 05:12 AM

Had 1 where they said it was unauthorised use of the PP account - like heck was it.. they clearly sent me the payment then wanted the money back!

Chargebacks would depend primarily on item being sold and what class of buyer you seem to be attracting.
