Any way around EAN numbers on Amazon

Just started on Amazon. Some of my items that I buy in have EAN numbers, but some I produce myself don't, but Amazon insit that I must get some.
I am unsure of the market on these items which are low value, so don't fancy paying out if there is a way around it.
Anyone ever found a way around this problem?
