I have been guilty of using 'sweet talk' via email/letter (I'm afraid I have a bad habit of doing this) & hence placed myself at risk of coming across incorrectly as you state GB.
It can be 'hard' to say whether it came off badly or well for me in several of the situations I've deployed this approach. Some fail, some success I guess.
I agree, this approach is better suited to a personal phone call rather than the printed word.
