Paypal asking for SSN

I have not been here in a while and I tried a search and could not find what I was looking for so if anyone can help then I appreciate it. The information that I know is most likely outdated.

This is a question Im sure gets asked alot

Is there anything specific that triggers paypal to ask for SSN? I deal with legit low risk items...so will they ask for it after I reach a certain sales amount for the year?

Yep. After 180 transactions I got asked it, on another account about 18,000 triggered it.

I've heard others say they got the trigger after a big January where they sold 5k.

They may ask for that at ANY time... you may try coming up with an excuse like "I am not comfortable to give you my SSN" but there are no guarantees.

So 180 transactions for the year or total?

I have an ebay account with propay that has been going ok but I was thinking about making about 10 new ebay/paypal accounts and spreading sales through them all just using paypal.

This is why I tell people to spread sales out of many, many accounts.

With pp really going after those who have the "potential" of hitting those numbers everyone needs to not sell so much on one account but spread sales out over different accounts.

Some have said you have to hit both and that is not true, you can get the request way earlier and very low numbers as shown in GB link.

You will get the 1099 if you hit both of them but still if you do not provide them the SSN etc after a period of time your account will be toast.

OP is more concerned about taxes I think than avoiding supplying the SSN.

Dont think that will work anymore.

Needs to look into other methods.

Not at all.... I am trying to avoid supplying SSN or having them ask for it. If they would accept a EIN i would be more then happy to give it to them.

EIN is preferable.

Accounts are having more success with that.

Regardless you want to avoid talk saying you are not comfortable to supply the SSN. Act like a professional and have an EIN

Thanks for the advice! I'll try my EIN if it ever comes to it.
