Can you get packages in a name different from yours? Or like in a nickname?

Okay so if I order a package from China and my name is like Robert and my nickname was like Bobby or something. Would you still get the package from the courier and still be able to sign for it? Or would they not let me sign? D:

Thanks for the info =)

yeah, when my parcels come through i sometimes cannot be bothered to get up and go to the door so i just ask my mum or dad to sign for it.

P.S most of the time i dont even do my signature i just do any scribble on the electronic machine cause of the touch response is so lame.

rsot 04-10-2013 11:44 AM

Should be able to - I have order packages from around the world using variations of my name and when asked, I explained a typo probably happened... works a lot

slim jim 04-10-2013 11:49 AM

You better be home in this case. If you go to the PO they won't give it to you without ID

danshan 04-10-2013 11:54 AM

PO wont give it to you unless, you have a couple different things

1. you need to have an ID that matches the name on the package OR the address
2. you can also have the slip if the delivery was missed and can sign the back authorizing whoever you want to pick it up and take that slip to the PO with the ID of whatever name is on the back of the slip.

When I am getting a package and I know the name does not match my ID or the address does not match my ID, I wait for the slip and take the slip filled out with my info on it to the PO.

I am sure there are exceptions locally but this is the rule and also note a lot of USPS people wont deliver something to an address if they know the persons name it happens often and you need to go to the PO to pick it up but again as long as your address matches NO problem

lightmaria 04-10-2013 11:58 AM

yeah I know PO won't do it but I mean packages delivered to my house. =) Thanks for your replys. So from what I'm getting from you guys is that you can with your house packages but not PO box packages?

@dashan: so if the name is different but the lets say it has my house address on my drivers license it should be okay? Speaking in terms of the PO box deliveries. thx

slim jim 04-10-2013 12:03 PM

Yes its hard to give a definite answer since a lot of postal workers create their own rules. You will have to know how your local place operates

danshan 04-10-2013 12:06 PM

if the address matches usually po box will give it to you but they sometimes require a form usps 1583 for each person receiving mail at the po box. I never use PO boxes I use mail boxes etc

Sandy D 04-10-2013 01:47 PM

They are suppose to deliver the mail to the address but in many cases in my state they require a photo ID of the person whos name in on the package.

I have many items shipped to a UPS box in a business name if that helps Maria.

danshan 04-10-2013 02:40 PM

can be Sandy but also they really do ask for a 1583 if it is someone else's name

The post office PO boxes would be a problem, but a independent po box would not be a problem as long as you let them know you are expecting a package.
They would be the ones signing for you as an agent.

danshan 04-10-2013 02:41 PM

Lightmaria is your question about home deliveries or Po box deliveries so are all on the same page here

lightmaria 04-10-2013 02:47 PM

home deliveries

danshan 04-10-2013 03:07 PM

no problems for that at all

all you need is someone at home old enough to sign for it. if you miss it all you need is the slip that the PO leaves and go pick it up at PO with ID with the same name or close or the ID has the same address as the delivery address if you do not have that you can sign whatever ID you have on the back of the slip before you go to the post office and problem solved. When you say courier I assume you mean USPS or DHL or UPS but they are all about the same with the rules.

corleone 04-10-2013 03:07 PM

It really doesn't make a difference, accepting a packaging, even addressed to a different name, is taking possession.

To answer your question, you can easily get away with using your middle name as your last name. If questioned: you gave them your full name and just say the vendor made a mistake.

I get boxes in a business name all of the time at a UPS store.

yotano211 04-10-2013 08:42 PM

All of my mom and pop PO Boxs know that I get packages in many names. 3 of the 4 gave me a list of the names of people I would get packages from but that last one doesn't really care. I ship all of my returns on eBay to that address. I am talking about PO Boxs, not home delivery. Home delivery doesn't really who signs for it. I have never been asked for ID to sign for stuff, even when I started getting tons of stuff in the mail. Now, they all know me so they just hand it to me no questions asked.

I get packages in crazy names all the time...thank god I get a long super well with my Post Office workers!

I always hook up my Mail man up and the workers at the post office, precisely for these types of occassions...

Home deliveries are usually OK.

Most delivery guys are grateful to be rid of the parcel. (Means less paperwork for them) ;)

oooSMOKYooo 04-11-2013 04:02 AM

Anyone can sign for a home delivery as long as they are over 18 its not a legally binding contract. Picking up parcels is a different story which you aint interested in anyway. Leave a note on your door for the parcel to be left with a neighbour, no missed deliverys then :-*

Pays to be professional. When I used to receive packages at my pobox, names would be quite offbeat and the postal girls there were very chill.
