Angry PAYPAL blocked/ asking for SS# at $4000 sales amount!

One of my accounts has been blocked from accepting payments. [I was unable to list and then got an email from them]. I had 5 auctions running that were accepted to list and were live. Midway through they made the change. A few ended last night and the buyer cannot pay! Rather than letting these sales be completed, which would be the intelligent thing to do ebay-wise to keep buyers happy, they did this. buyer has notified me that he tried to pay and could not.

Needless to say I am not giving them the number. So what happens next?

so now I wonder, can I put through a non paying bidder dispute? imagine how happy the buyers will be. I am not canceling the transactions as paypal SHOULD take my payments.

p.s. I have other accounts with similar $ amounts that are working fine. It seems like a random thing, or possibly based on the account's total sales for 2012.

Does the notice say SSN or offer other options?

All may not be lost

Also, how many items have you sold in 2013 total?

I am over the 200 listings/year marker.

The notice does not refer to other options. Simply stated: we're asking for your tax ID number due to new IRS rules.

You do know you can supply an EIN for this?

Have a quick read of the below thread:

http://www.aspkin.com/forums/paypal-...-usa-only.html

Basically paypal will ask for A CHOICE of ID
That might give you an option to save the account

another poster said he ignored the SSN requirement and then the NEXT year he signed back onto the same PP and the requirement for SSN was disappeared. Since new year = new reset to the thresholds to sell on PP.

can somebody confirm that simply taking a break from the PP acct (until the next year) will help you avoid the SSN ?

This is precisely the issue with Paypal. They harass for personal information which isn't prioritized to the goals of a dedicated seller. Try to ignore the requirement temporarily. As Hapajenn1 said maybe they will reset the thresholds effectively fending off the requirement.

Sorry to hear.

From my personal experience 2012/2013

1. Accounts that have received a the request but not to the point of being restricted from receiving payments were reset in the new year.

2. Accounts that have received numerous requests and get restricted from receiving payments did not get reset in the new year.

I think it may go like this:

Meet both requirements. Blocked next year.
Meet one requirement. Allowed to sell next year.

I received numerous requests on one account very early in 2012, but did not meet both requirements at the end of the year. Was maybe 80.000$ but under 200 items. Account is still fine in 2013.

It has been posted as low as 5,200.00 in sales with a low number of items sold got the request as well.

I was told by a tax professional that it is not the numbers they are seeing rather the "potential" of you hitting those thresholds.

With pp nothing is concrete.

Many posted that they continued to run their accounts after the request and did well for a month or two. Others reported they waited it out and come Jan 1 the request was gone off pp.

More horror stories and money locked up by not providing the EIN then not.

Usually they do not block the account but send the request and give you time to respond. Was this your case?

PP is also known to look at the RATE of sales - if you sold lets say 100 items in the first month with $4000 in sales - they can pre-limit you based on the expectation of 200/20000k in sales by year end.
