Is this type of reference allowed by ebay?

Ok I am a bit confused. eBay states you can make comparisons to "similar" products in comparison to your own, so long as it is not included in your title. So this would mean you could say something within your description like "this purse is similar to Gucci". However, would this be considered a trademark violation?

Ooohh this is going to bug me because I used to know the answer to this.

They have very specific wording guidelines that I think are written out in-depth in the VeRo program rules.

....and I just did a search on their Learning Center for their vero rules and the only thing that came up was Global Shipping?

Oh eB... you've done it again.

From what I have understood, you cant even REFER or USE the original trademark name unless the item is genuine.

So you cant say "it is similar to Gucci" - you can say "it is similar to high-end branded item" or so without naming the exact company

Even if you can get away from the ebay bots, someone will throw you under the bus and report you.

No, there (used to be?) are some rules with the use of the words "like" "similar to.." etc in product titles.

It was very specific and laid out.

Possibly but was never really allowed to use trademarked names with 'similar' and such wording - issue was buyer being confused and thinking legit

Item numbers or product numbers work well

Bad Movie Review PRE-2013:

Paramount Pictures new release, Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney runs for nearly two hours, which is about two hours too long. It is boring, full of clichés...

Bad Movie Review POST-2013:

A well-known movie studio has just released a new movie with a famous male actor and a famous female actor which shows what happens when a disaster causes them to go floating into space. It runs for nearly two hours, which is about two hours too long. It is boring, full of clichés...

Welcome to the new IP police state!

Edited to add: I have not seen Gravity and don't recall the studio that produced it. This was just an example I used to make a point.

Getting lost in space is a helplessly long way to die potentially
