UK - Adding RBS savings account direct debit failure everytime
 

Guys,

Using RBS savings accounts, the last 4 I have tried adding to paypal have all added fine, then it asks for direct debit instructions to complete adding the bank... Upon clicking next paypal ALWAYS fails with the following error ""Sorry, an error occurred after you clicked the last link".

Once this happens the bank then gets removed from paypal and you can not re add it as it says its linked to a paypal account already.

Now, I have just been emailing paypal explaining the situation (once per account) and they just add the bank for me and all is ok.

However, we all know what its like emailing paypal, I do not want to raise any flags with them!

So does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is anyone else having this issue with RBS savings accounts?

Everything was fine prior to these!

Generally speaking, you cannot have a direct debit from a savings account. The bank will reject the mandate.

Aniseed is right, it must be an account that can take the DD mandate.

It could also be another one of PP's classic glitches that you've run into.

Well I did about 3 no problem, then the last 4 have all done this.

With regards to the DD Mandate, but I just email paypal, and they add the bank for me and the direct debit is setup and the deposits are in my account to verify it and no more issues...

It does not say there is a problem with my bank, it just says paypal has encountered an error please go back and try again.

Then when I try and re-add the bank it says the bank is already registered with paypal :argue:

RBS saving accounts are the only ones that have ever given me issues.

Thus I use basic or current accounts with that bank

Solves my problems. Means my account is not being flagged with PayPal.

I use Halifax and Santander savings accounts they work well, never had no problems

I wonder if the deposits are not made via the direct debit process (which uses BACs and takes hours), but just as a standard FPS deposit using the sort code and account number. Otherwise they couldn't do the deposits instantly.

When do you get a problem? Straight away or after a few hours / days?

Many companies don't actually send the direct debit mandate to the bank (or the bank doesn't bother with it) - the bank just assumes its legitimate in good faith to save paperwork, as they are strict on which companies can use direct debits. This is why direct debit fraud is so popular. The direct debit guarantee scheme is therefore setup to allow customers to chase up an error afterwards.

Best to call them during the daytime, you'll probably get put through to someone who will put it manually on for you...

Little update guys...

Firstly, make sure you understand I can add the bank no problem at all BUT as soon as I try to confirm the direct debit I get an issue...

It does not anywhere say there is an issue with the bank, simply that PayPal has encountered an error with loading the page and I should press back on my browser...

When I go back I notice the bank is removed from my account.

When I try and add the account again it says the account is already linked toa. PayPal account and can not be added.

So I then email paypal and they add the bank for me.

At this point I still have to do the direct debit, but when I do it this time it always works no problem and sends the 4 digit code to my bank instantly and verify a the account.

However!

I just added another instant saver to a new stealth and I was expecting to repeat the above process, but to my surprise it added perfectly, 4 digit code sent to the bank instantly and paypal verified.

So that's 4 ribs savers that have worked for me and 4 that have required a manual add from paypal...
