In the opening sequence of People's Court, listen carefully and you'll hear the narrator say that the case is real and litigants are paid for their appearance.

Getting back to OP's concern, hopefully by now with all the responses...there really should be nothing to lose sleep over.

I'd like to know who this professional scammer is though.

I'm certain they've used this tactic on others and it's probably scared someone to just giving in and reimbursing item.
