eBay asking for details I don't have

Hello

Fired up a stealth account a few days ago, did a bit of browsing and then though I would try and list something small today.

eBay say I'm logging in from a new computer and need to verify it's me bla bla bla

Anyway they give me 3 options, email, phone call or text, unfortunately whichever one I click on they ask me to answer a security question.

The options to answer are...

1. What is the other account called at the same address as yours? (I have no idea as it's stealth)

2. What is your pets name? I am 100% sure I never put in a pets name as a security question when I set up the account, I have all my information in an excel file and that isn't there.

What are my options?

Thanks

Point to note for future reference: Make a note of all info you use to register. You now know why this is vitally important.

Did you delete/clear cookies recently? This is how they detect a 'new' computer i.e. when there are no cookies present when you log in.

If you didn't then you are likely to have been linked in some way, usually through address.

Do you have access to the address you used or is it one you just plucked out of thin air?

If it's the latter and a real address then there may well be someone resident there who already has an e/b account.

Your options are to answer the questions, try live chat or phone call and try to blag it or forget the account and move on to another.

It's a new machine, was trying out a VMWare machine, clearly I should have built up some more browse history before trying to list.

It's just an address I plucked out the air so I'm going to have to try chat support or a phone call I guess, not much loose at this point.

OK so randomly it't stopped asking me for those details and has just taken me immediately to the create listing page.

I find this very odd?

I didn't go ahead and list anything, do you think it's safe to do so?

The received wisdom here is that you should wait a few weeks before listing anything and maybe buy a few cheap things on the account first. Then wait til you get some feedback for the buying to establish yourself as a good regular member.

I have had my Ebay main selling account for 12 years.

On odd occasions I have this "you must be using another computer" message come up and I am NOT using a different computer. I usually just clear the cache and reboot and it goes away.

A couple of weeks ago I got it in my Firefox browser for no apparent reason. However the message did not appear when I logged in with IE (which I rarely use).

Nephew suggested I was using an old verion of Firefox and he updated it to the latest. Message has gone away next time I logged in.

Go figure.

Browse and bid for 3-4 weeks before selling anything - make several stealth accounts and spread sales.

OK I'll hold back a while then before selling. It's an old account I used to sell from, I have about 80+ feedback as a seller on there with no negatives but they are from about a year ago.

I have a main account I sell a decent amount on but I'm well aware I can't be putting all my eggs in one basket so wan't to get this account back up and running and get a few others going as well.

You should start up with a few cheaper "no risk" items as suddenly putting more expensive stuff on an account that had not been used in a while could lead Ebay to suspect the account had been hacked.

You need some more recent "safe" looking feedback.

So you kick-started an old account with an address from out of fresh air?

Man, you are playing with fire.

From what you have described you may have accidently picked an address that has an existing ebay account.

I would consider not using this account. It is likely flagged.

Be very careful.

OK so what should I have done differently, I can't use my own address as it's banned on another account or will that not matter if I use another name?

I'm not keen on asking friends to use their address.
