When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Every 24 hours or so, when I click something on eBay, it asks me to log in again. No big deal, this has always happened. I am, for the record, using the Firefox browser.

For the last couple of days, when this happens, I get a little bar at the top of the screen asking me if it is OK to allow them to run "Silverlight". I don't know much about Silverlight except that it has something to do with DRM, or copy protection.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Has anyone else experienced this?

And NO, my account has nothing to do with DVD's or movies.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

I thought Silverlight was a Microsoft effort to outdo Adobe Flash?

Not the best of sources but...

Microsoft Silverlight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When I saw microsoft, I recalled the divorce from Gates. Would not go near it.

APPLE is working so very well for me.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Silverlight doesn't have anything to do with DRM per se. Think of it as Microsoft's new ActiveX or a competitor to Java. Maybe eBay is using it as a flash alternative to track people who unknowingly activate it.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

I blocked it just to be safe. None of eBay's features or UI seemed to be hampered by disabling it.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Thanks everyone. I stand corrected on the DRM issue. Per Wikipedia, Silverlight DOES have a DRM component, but it is not its main purpose. I though it was, as the only time I've needed it was for Netflix and the Hallmark Movie website - so I thought that DRM was its primary purpose.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

It's primarily for audio and video playback..

Weird how eBay is using it (maybe for ad playback).. why not HTML5?

Most people don't have installed by default so it would be a bad tracking plugin.. without researching it further I doubt it's for any sort of tracking but don't quote me on that. .

Since when did ebay use something correctly?

Well this is a "non-problem" for EB. Once they ask to install it most users will.

This is something I have found:

Supercookie: Tracking technologies that typically do not use HTTP, supercookies are often created by applications, such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, that you might have installed on your computer. These cookies can store up to 10MB of data, whereas an HTML cookie is limited to 4K. Supercookies can also track user behavior across multiple sites.

aspkin 07-11-2014 07:06 AM

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Hmm.. interesting.. it's old tech.

I would not suggest installing it though.. it's just not needed. HTML5 and Adobe Flash basically replace it.

The only thing I've ever seen that actually requires Silverlight is Netflix.

If I am using a different windows user for each stealth account, Do i need to worry about adobe reader or silverlight?

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Nope. But those shouldn't even trigger... I never saw any of mine trigger

Callidus 08-14-2014 03:54 PM

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Triggers it if you are using FireFox Portable though. Noticed it today. Easy enough to block it and as mentioned above doesn't hinder performance

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Ah "portable" is the key word then.

I'm too paranoid, I stay away from non full softwares and OS and Apps.

I'd sacrifice convenience for stability and peace of mind.

Callidus - are you saying that it may affect my accounts if I am using the Firefox portable mobile app (is this what this is?)?

So, basically, as long as I am using different windows users on my computer then there is nothing to worry about with regards to adobe, silverlight, flash etc?

what is the difference between firefox and firefox portable?

also, do you use different users for different stealth accounts? if so then why do you not install flash, java, silverlight etc?

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

I think as you are learning stealth Spacecowboy999 it would be easier for you to just keep user accounts seperate, don't worry too much about portable until you have fully understood how stealth works. Using portable can be done but I would advise to stick to the basics for now, new account = new eBay / PP account :)

Portable you can 100 folder in your UBS thump drive for 100 account and they don't share any information. MUST be open /run one at a time :)

I was using User account but not anymore :)

thanks and that is the plan - keep simple and keep on seperate accounts.

even by doing this, should I also use firefox portable aswell?

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

That is how I started out as well just to get my feet wet. Keeping everything seperate really helps. Once you get the hang of it then I would transfer over to portable FF way of doing things. I run well over a hundred high limit accounts this way now. But it is a great way of learning the ropes while you are still making mistakes.

Re: When eBay asks me to sign in, it wants to run Silverlight???

Firefox Portable is a self contained version of Firefox, by that it means you can have 10-20 different Firefox browsers....1 firefox browser for each Stealth Account. The idea behind using this method is the following:

1. It allows you NOT to have so many user accounts
2. It allows for cookies to be stored separately in a self contained folder
3. Eliminates the need to Log Off/Log into User Accounts
4. Computer Runs smoother

I just started using portable Firefox , and it is so much better, and easier having one user account

But you need to be careful and make sure your logged out of one account completely before opening another

I'm also going to convert to this new stealth method...thanks to MM's numerous posts championing it.

I'm slow to change things, especially when they're going so well, but will give it a shot with a few accounts.

You guys are welcome, It's not for everyone and I do feel that it's something that should be done extremely carefully and slowly....As DmShark said, gotta make sure you close the previous instance of FP before opening the new one....

Is it possible to have each browser report different fonts using this method ?

Why concerned about different fonts?

Last I checked it's based on your installed fonts (installed on your OS). If you want to show different fonts then you would need a virtual machine with different installed fonts.. there MIGHT be a plugins to spoof installed fonts with Firefox.. a Firefox plugin. They have plugins for everything. :)

I'm concerned because I prefer to respond to customers in both Arial and Comic Sans - but it all depends on which side of the bed I got out of earlier.

Yes GB - Maybe adding the plugin "user agent switcher" (amongst others) to every instance of FF portable would be enough to confuse the bots.

Interesting read about fingerprinting.

Apparently, ActiveX and Silverlight allow querying the CPU type and many other details.

Do Java and ActiveX interact with portable FF the same way as they do with the fully installed version of FF ?
