Are you saying that Paypal will accept a Passport ID Number in place of a Tax ID?

I'm asking...

It doesnt make sense if they would, i just thought it was odd that they would accept that and not sure what it meant.

Re: PayPal accepting Passport numbers?

I just saw it yesterday in the section of verification (where you can add EIN, ITIN etc).
If this would serve as a verification method the same way
as ssn etc. this is great news.
I would assume that you would have to present yourself
from the beginning with the same nationality as it is shown
in your passport if you intend to use the passport for identification.
PP asks for nationality at the bottom of the security
question section.
I am guessing that they will also ask you for a copy of
the passport details (name, dob etc), because there is
no way for them to verify a passport number with a name.
If this is true it is huge.

Why not? What if you are leaving the USA for 6 months to Germany, and would
like to open a pp account there? I am just guessing this is the reason why they added this option. Or I am missing something.

The Passport isn't a tax id option.. The irs has no use for that info I dont believe. So what is the point of it?

I noticed this as well. If its inside the SSN/EIN box, I assume it can be used in the same fashion. Maybe the IRS will be accepting 1099's for passport numbers in 2015 ?

I hate to burst bubble, they never simplify! This would be something in ADDITION to the normal things. More steps!

Did you check it with pp?
I am not sure what you mean by "in addition to the normal things".
If one has ITIN or EIN why would he be required or even want to
provide a passport number in addition?
It is in the section of where you can choose how to verify your
id for taxes purposes with ssn, ein, itin and now - passport.

If so, that would save many people a lot of time in applying and waiting for
ITIN which basically serves as TAX ID in case one does not have a ssn/ein etc.

Re: PayPal accepting Passport numbers?

The IRS is so messed up that would not add that mass confusion....

Meaning its just additional verification. Now they might require EIN AND Passport Number.... I know from conversations with paypal accounting that they have had a heck of a time matching up EIN with correct names and address. IRS rejected a lot of returns because of it. I can only assume that with passport and EIN it lowers errors. Or Stealth info

Avoid supplying a passport always.
