My favorite site, although it did not have nearly the traffic eBay had was Auctions.com - they had a live and let live policy when eBay was creating 100 new rules a day.
Back in the late 90's I sold on Auctions.com, eBay, Amazon Auctions, Yahoo Auctions and the network of auction sites that included MSN, Excite, Lycos and others. eBay was 50% of my business and the others combined were the other 50%.
When Amazon started their auctions, it looked like they would be a REAL COMPETITOR for eBay. The traffic was HUGE and some weeks my Amazon sales would almost equal my eBay sales. But, the traffic slowly went away over time. After a year or so, it was no longer worth listing there.
Yahoo auctions also started strong and died a slow death.
There were countless other companies who tried auctions that could never gain traction. Some were big companies trying to get a piece of the pie and others were just individuals with dreams of hitting it big with online auctions. Most of them died off pretty quickly.
