Can You Black Out Your Driver's License Number?
 

Looked all over the forums and found most of the posts were from 2007 or 2009 so I don't trust them. Also, there were a lot of unanswered questions and "I think you can do this" or "maybe" which isn't good enough.

So, when you are limited and PayPal wants your Driver's License, can you black out your driver's license number as "sensitive information" and be OK? And, do they even check the numbers?

Also, I moved awhile back while my account was fine, but they wanted my ID to verify my new address. Any chance that PP would have software that would match the picture on the ID I send them this time to the one I sent them in before?

I realize "doc talk" is not allowed, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the questions above, but if they do check numbers/match pictures, can someone PM me? I have the "tools" available just need the right info.

Any documents with blacked out info will be rejected

No, you can't. Everything should be visible, clear and bright. But they would accept a legit document, if it has a bad JPEG quality (like 50%).

Do they check the driver's license number? If they have my number from the first time I had to send it in do they save it and they will match it to the number this time I I send it in? Or do they just make sure the info matches what is on your account?

Also, do they check the info against any algorithm used to come up with the DL number? I live in California and have read the CA DMV doesn't share stuff, but I don't know if that is correct.

Basically do I have more PS work to do? Bills, etc. they want are easy, but the DL worries me.

They check everything. Blacked out won't work. Used one will not work as well. Poorly looking will not work. Nicely looking but with "improper" info will not work. For a new account, you need everything new, not a single field in any of the documents may be the same.

Just sent in docs on Monday with Everything blacked out except Name, Address and DOB. Account was then unlimited and has been working great.

That's promising! Looks like maybe the rules are different in the USA than in LV and they only make sure the name/address/DOB matches the PP account.

Just to be clear fox20c, you did this on a driver's license, not just bills?

Yes I have no doubts that an algorithm is used to make sure the number is valid

I'm sure valid, but more importantly if they can tell if your information would generate the number on the license?

My suggestion is that a driver license is quite simple, and does not have a MRZ zone, so actually they cant validate it with any sophisticated technologies, so if something is blacked out, they don't care as they can't validate it anyway. And for Passport, everything should be visible, to check that data in the passport matches MRZ, so is not altered in any way.

I'm from the UK (don't know if that helps) but when ebay asked me for documents after I hit the £1900 limit, I sent them in driving license, with nearly everything blacked out except for the names and date of birth and it was accepted with no problems at all.

OK. I think I will just try to black it out. Last questions I guess. There is absolutely no reason they need to know what you look like so it OK to black out your picture?

Best just to leave the picture as it is otherwise they might get a little too suspicious, if you need some more info regarding this topic feel free to pm me.

Only the newer photo driving licences in the UK have pictures anyway, the older licences which the majority of people over here still have don't have photo's. These older style licences last until we are 70 years old so not essential to change them over to photo type of smaller licences.
