How long does it usually take for a USPS Mail Redirect to kick in?

I once used it two days before ordering an item so I could receive the item at my actual house, but the item never went to my house!

Last time I used it I think it was about a week before mail started forwarding for me.

But if you do it online you can specify a date for it to kick in. I'm not sure how accurate that is though.
