Where did he get his vanilla and itunes cards? On the dark web these items are often traded because they have been acquired illegally. They could easily get cancelled.

I have not tried itunes gc but vanilla visa gc I have cashed out via paypal, ccnow, other credit card services.

Be careful, because even though he may not be out to get you, someone might have sold him something with problems... like if you buy and apply iTunes gift cards from shady sources, your iTunes can get locked up. This happens when gift cards were bought with fraudulent or unauthorized payments, or if you apply gift cards that were sold that were NOT meant for US accounts. I know that this doesn't happen a ton, but I know two people who HAVE had this happen, one eventually got their iTunes back up and running, but the other never did. Be careful!
