Claiming back DHL VAT

Hi all,

Kinda off topic but I am sure I read somewhere that it is possible to claim back all the tax paid to DHL.

I pay probably around £100 a month. This doesn't have anything to do with eBay but easily spend over £1000 a year on just importing VAT.

I still don't really get how DHL fee's are calculated. One time I imported round £2k+ and was charged around £90 total. The other month I did £1000 and got charged nothing and just this month I did £600 and got charged £60

First thing to ask then is are you VAT registered?

Generally depends on a) category and b) how much your supplier has declared.

If any of those factors are changing each time you import, then that's why your customs fees are fluctuating.

No way you can get money back from dhl They charge vat tax on behalf of hmrc
So dhl Noting to do with this unless they charged wrong, its all depends on your custom invoice value, types of goods As some itemsitems has 0% tax some has 0% vat etc

If the freight value not included in the invoice then they also put very high freight cost then charge vat on that

If you vat registered then you can claim this vat back but paying £100 per month don't think you are vat registered

I am not VAT registered but maybe worth doing so if I can claim it back
I do not see it being too much of a problem as VAT can be included in my price.
A lot of the companies I work with are also VAT registered so may be beneficial in more ways then one. Anybody know if the process is difficult?

Think 100 times before you register for vat

It's not simple as people think very complex and every three months need to fill vat return

And when say claim back does not mean you will get money back from hmrc

This is how it works
you bought 1000 stuff and imported into uk where let says only attract vat with 0% tax some you paid 200 vat on this total cost you 1200

Now if you are vat register and let say you sold for 1300 and vat due on this 260
Now as you already paid 200 vat which can be claim back and only needs to pay 60 more

So Profit £40
Where if you not vat register profit £100
But if you over the vat limit then should register as it's against the law

If you become VAT registered then you need to charge VAT on all items you sell

If your only paying DHL a few hundred a year in VAT then its really not worth it.

Most the time it only makes sense to become VAT registered after you go over the threshold and even then most the time it makes sense to use the flat rate which means you cannot claim back VAT anyway.

If you want to work out if it is the best thing for you to do then an accountant would be the best person to talk to
