Buyer dispute after 30 days, decline return request

Item purchased in december, buyer requested a return in Feb. Item in question, buyer has admitted altering software on it it via messages.

So I have an option of accept return (i pay return post), give full refund, partial refund or decline return request.

Ive never seen the decline request before, what happens if I do this then the buyer puts a paypal claim in. The item is fairly expensive, so if he puts a paypal claim in after I decline am I likely to lose the item and the money?

Its a private account, 9 years old, funds have already been taken from paypal.

The guy has altered the items software, installed non legit software and now hes having the issues. He is trying to blame the hardware for the issues. Ive tried my best to help, but he just wants his cash back.

Any advice on this one, the decline return is new to me as I try my best to avoid these issues.

From eBay's side you can decline the return request and that's that. In other words its at your discretion to accept the return since it falls outside of the return window. However, as you mentioned rightly so.. the buyer can escalate it from Paypal's side where you will have to continue defending your position.

Thanks Play.

So if I reject their ebay claim and they then put a paypal claim in, will they still have to send the item back to me before any money is permanently taken from me. I just dont want to lose both the item and money.

They would need to return the item at the very least before being able to get any sort of refund yes

Thanks James.

This new feature of reject return (new to me) seems to be an extension of buyers can get their money back... If its over 30 days that should be it, unless its a business account and brand new item of course. I just want to play it carefully, will just reject it without sending a message etc.

Had similar situation myself last year, buyer requested return via ebay several months after purchase which I refused and case closed. Within an hour or so he opened a claim via paypal saying item was faulty and I was forced to accept the return. When I received item back it was working perfectly and resold with no problems. At the end of the day there is no way of defending these money back claims, even when you know for certain buyer is telling lies just to get a refund.

Decline the return request and if he open paypal claim and fight the case, if he return the item not in same position as you sent him you can make appeal on PayPal which they normally accept and reimburse you the cost. They may ask for proof
