Which one is prefered and why

I'd go with a VPN since it encapsulates the entire connection (incoming/outgoing data).

However if you know what your doing with proxies, i.e. port configuration etc., then that could prove to be a cost effective alternative.

I would recommend you VPN. I am using 24vc VPN service with more than 30 accounts without any problem. They provide excellent service.
