delivery failed notifications

The majority of emails I get from Royal mail via RM account, saying delivery attemped but failed/not in, get picked up by customer at depot a few days later. But I keep an eye on them as I do not want them returning, due to costs.

....but the ones that baffle me are the ones where it sticks at attempted or sometimes ready for delivery and it just stops. Customer does not ever contact me, so assume they got it or forgot about it. Is this to do with barcode not getting scanned or updated on status? it is annoying!

Its quite common for RM to not update the tracking info, especially if recipient was not home and later collect item from local sorting office. This even happens with special delivery items, which is supposed to be a 'secure' service for valuable items.
