Can Paypal verify that a passport is real by checking the info on it?

My supposition is that they can verify the validity of it by an algorithm to check the numbers but the ID itself would be confidential and would not be accessible to cross-reference.

Other knowledgeable UK folx correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes they check to see if real or not.

Had issues with Paypal coming back and saying documents are not real after being sent in.

I have used ⊗⊗⊗⊗ documents to life pay pal limits, the dircining license was real, however, which might make a difference and then I used a a ⊗⊗⊗⊗/real water Bill I I took a photo of my water bill and added my mates name and address to Match the real UK driving license

And sorry to highjack this post however I need some advice please, so Long storry short, I had a restriction due to UK VAT, as they belikeved I was an overseas seller. I had an amended USA address as this was what I required a few years back, due tot this new update all oversea sellers need to regsiter for VAT. as a UKL seller I dont need to pay, so after 2 weeks of emailing and calling the are willing to lifet the restriction however they now want ID and proof off address, this isnt too much of a problem as i used my mums old account, I changed the first name however *example only* to Lizzy, now this isn't my mums name, I was thinking of sending in her real ID phone bill etc, explaining the difference in name, ebay will actually see that the account was originally registered *lizzy* and hopefully accept that a nick name was used, .....OR i Doctor the I.D on photoshop, what are your thoughts guys we are at make or break? I think go with the real docs and say, I prefer Lizzy, os I changed the first name, the surname is the same.

Hi,folks.Got simmilar issue with Driving licence.It's a foreign one as i'm not British born but reside there.Anyway could anybody of the chaps stating that PP can verify if ID is legit explain why they think so.My believe is that unless there is a Police investigation they have now right to get access to confidential databases.
Or am i wrong.PP is not a bank nor an official authority.Just a private company handling money.It's not even against the law the use alterego with them i think.
Except there would be any kind of fraud suspect.Even then they would have to contact Police.

That's exactely what i think.if for example you got a limmited account and the 180 days are over they have to accept any ID with correct credentials.
As the buyer didn't dispute and they got those fees they have no right to keep the funds,regardless of what's in those agreement.If there would be an investigation in the future then they can anyway trace you by bank acc and the bogus ID would be against you but till then they just have to accept what you supply them.

The Lamb expression was only meant to know your right's.
Since PP is not a bank it is not agains't the law to use an alter ego.
They might catch you and hold the money for 180 day untill the legal period of buyer raising a case but after that time they have to release the money.
Otherwise it is an unlawful enrichment.

I did m8,trust me.This but doesn't change anything i wrote about.I did even read those user agreement.But there's no word about''we will keep you funds if you provide false info''.Only that they can start a legal action

Means that for a better and easyer reading, it would be useful to space phrases out so it doesn't look like a monolithic block of words.

There are some things they can check. Like for example the check digits in the passport number. But there is nothing thy could check that you couldn't check by yourself.
