Quite happy finally eBay forcing to provide vat number so at least prices will go up on eBay

Those who not paying vat selling cheaper and making more profit this will be end for them

If they not paying vat how can they pay their taxes properly?

I heared they sent emails to many sellers recently for vat number

Sadly it dosent work like that, the Chinese are now doing the VAT thing and still keeping prices ridiculously low - sheerly because the HRMC wont have the scope to investigste their tax returns, so there returns will be a comical array of stories much like the Bible lol.

I have a VAT number and pay VAT on the flat rate system. Ebay cant take my house and car like HMRC can who have wide ranging powers.

If you are paying income tax, it can actually SAVE YOU MONEY to register for the VAT flat rate scheme.

For example I pay 7.5% vat on the flat rate scheme, but I can then lower my taxable turnover for income by the full 20%. This is to prevent you paying income tax on the VAT part of your sale and getting taxed twice.

Ebay state they only want your trading name on the VAT formand ebay user name to match. So I will use my number, keep the stealth details , but change the trading names to match.

Yeah this is what I thought. I dont think it needs to match the Username, just the trading name, so its fairly easy to change. Theoretically, you could also change it to a name similar to a dissolved company which still has an existing VAT number..

If you give eBay your own VAT number with trading name attached, they simply check your VAT registration details on the VIES database which also states if its valid or expired-http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/
This will give them all the details such as name and address the VAT no. is registered to, so if this is your own VAT no. with your name or address you will create a link (this is my case).
So is it an option to find a local ltd (no personal name attatched) company near your stealth ebay registered address and use their vat no. and change the stealth trading name to match.

Using another companies name is fraud! mmmm..... best not use someone else's name to set up an Ebay / Paypal account.

That would most probably not going to work. Have made a call to eBay last week and they said that the VAT number is not just for eyes, they are actually changing the actual info of turnovers with HMRC and this is happening for quite a long time, it is what i have been told. So if they are doing that, ⊗⊗⊗⊗ VAT number would never going to work no matter at what phase it is given to ebay.

Had a similar experience last year, avoided sending docs and tried to reduce sales but account was on hold till i uploaded a vat number. Did this for 4 months and kept sales to minimum and now deregistered.
