New account: how much can you sell without being verified?

I've seen really old posts saying that you can go for a very short time or 5 listings or something?

Where is the verifying? It's only Paypal right?

Do you need to be verified on ebay at all?

(I've registered many many many accounts... I just can't remember!!)
