GDPR - right to be forgotten?
 

I'm sure I understand it wrong...!
This new GDPR... it says that companies can only hold your data for a certain amount of time and then have to delete - or you have the right to request deletion.

Or is this only for marketing purposes?
The Facebook debacle changes everything.
Companies should not be allowed to keep a record on you forever?

Doesn't make sense - if they think you have done XYZ wrong then they have a right to keep your details on record?

I know the privacy protections extended in the UK & EU are a bit more stringent than in the US, at least at this time.

The Facebook/Zuckerburg grilling may hasten new regulations and/or protections coming up, you can be sure of that.

Of course, just like anything Congress or the Govt. tries to meddle with, they end up screwing something up, right?

I'm just hoping that maybe someone will say: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to track with cookies and get peoples IP addresses.

IP address: I learned recently how you can PIN POINT someone's location - JUST by using IP address - that kind of power should not be in the hands of stupid idiots like ebay.

anyone can pinpoint if they have an ip address, nothing can stop that now. the trick is to have an ip that is not totally accurate, if that is your aim.

i was just about to make a post on the same subject - didn't realise i had already asked! :)

QUESTION: can I ask for ebay to COMPLETELY wipe ALL information they have stored on me?

just thinking out loud... surely a business should have a right to keep someone's details on record? like a bad customer they don't want to serve? BUT this flies in the face of the privacy laws?

You gave them permission to keep all your data when you registered accepting their ToS

You guys are talking about "consumer protection" laws. Sellers are not consumers and thus not protected by these laws.

hmm any experience here in central EU like germany, poland, etc`regarding the deletion of seller accounts?
since it is a law to protect individuals afaik, not only consumers, and i am an individual.. they have to delete my data
in compliance with the gdpr i also have to delete data from commercial customers that are buying from me, either they provide a company name or VAT ID..?

or what part am i missing?

these companies can't treat us like caged animals
we have rights

the biggest problem: not enough people standing up and complaining and wanting to stand up for their rights and test the system!

account deletion is one thing...
and 'secretly' collecting data to identify you is another thing altogether - they collect data that pinpoints who you are and where you are - imagine if this falls into the wrong hands.

Second, you must honor the “right to be forgotten.” Say you reach out to a contact who has no interest in your business or what you are offering. This person wants you to delete their email address, along with any other information you might have about them. To comply with GDPR, you must respect these wishes and erase the person’s information from your B2B database.

I would like to raise this question again. Since we are EU citizens we have rights to request them to delete our data. In fact they will delete personal details such as Names, cards, phone number, but they might keep Address, Email, IP and PayPal account ID on my opinion as this is not considered as personal information. Has anyone tried to ask them to delete data and register again under same details ? Just curious.
