Broadband - how many people share your IP?

Purely out of interest...
In the average fibre broadband... how many other people share your IP?
Is it just you?

I think I'm right in saying that one connection is shared between about 50 homes or something? (Though I could be imagining this!)

Given restriction on IP numbers - they're running out of IP4 numbers - then the answer MUST be yes... others are using and sharing the same IP?

So just so you know, an IP can only be used by one Modem at a time...Depending on your ISP and modem, when you reset your Modem it may force an IP reset which will give you a new IP. IPV4 is running out of IP's which is why IPV6 is now being implemented. So again, you can't share the same IP with multiple homes, it doesn't work that way.

It does work that way when ISP's put a whole neighborhood or town on private IP's using NAT. It's not unheard of considering we officially ran out of IPv4's in 2011.

In my opinion, that has a lot to do with why eBay isn't so strict on linking accounts solely by a common IP. Because there are hundreds of users with the same IP in certain cases.

ISP NAT'd me!

Re: Broadband - how many people share your IP?

thanks guys.
i won't be mixing IP addresses just to be safe all the same.
i thought i'd ask though.

my isp, i called them up.
they told me that the ip number gets refreshed EVERY 30 days.
they were adamant about this.
after having observed for 3 months, it hasn't changed.

Oh gosh, if they said that to me I would just shake my head.. some people.

In YOUR case, you will be the only one using your IP address while it's assigned to you. All rules outlined within eBay Stealth apply to you. Do not assume your IP address will not be a linking issue; it will. Follow the rules outlined in the guide you'll be fine.

Only the people connected to the same modem will share the same IP

Which ISP are you with? Some use static IPs that wont change but others you can force the IP to change by changing the the MAC address and pulling a new IP

Misleading info in this thread. Carrier-grade NAT is very common, particularly in the UK.

I have never come across it myself in a residential area

At any given time, its those connected to the same router.

Another household with their own modem/router won't ever have the same IP as you.

P.S. I've not come across this "NAT'd" concept here in the UK, and i've been with an array of ISPs.

The number of IPv4 IPs out there is smaller than the number of devices out there. It doesn't mean same IP is being dished out, but rather old/used IPs are being recycled. (Not all devices use the internet simultaneously).

Bear in mind many ISPs are shifting over to IPv6, and in turn this is making space on the IPv4 front.

Hopefully that all wasn't too confusing. To summarise - don't worry right now. This is a very fickle aspect of stealth with an abundance of alternative solutions should you hit a brick wall down the line.
