Scary message from stealth address's neighbour :s

Okay so today I received a message from an eBayer asking me why I was using their neighbours addy.

I'd like to start by saying that this stealth account was purchased from a verified buyer years ago and this was the address they chose for me. I assume that the suspicion was caused by ebays automatic return system in which packages are sent back to that address without giving us a chance to tell buyers to return to a different address.

At this point, what can I say to this person? How can I possible style this out. Also should I change the address to another one immediately? I'm worried that this individual reports me to eBay and I'll end up losing a store.

Thanks

When I list I always check the option for returns not accepted so that the buyer has to contact you. I assume the neigbour has signed for a return item that came back to your stealth address? Maybe just reply to the neighbour and tell them you don't know how this has happened and you will speak to Ebay to get it sorted? Although sometimes it's best to just ignore the message and hopefully they don't contact you again.

Many thanks for your response especially at this time of night. The eBayer actually messaged me beforehand asking if they can collect and I told them that we don't offer collections as the stock is located elsewhere. That's when they just straight up asked me.

I think if I ignore them then it'll be too obvious that I'm using the address intentionally. I might just have to play stupid. I definitely have to check the returns not accepted box.

Was just kind of spooked when I got their message as it's never happened to me before in all the years.

I was going to say, tell them you used to live there but forgot to change your address when you moved out, but you never know - they could have lived there for the last two decades. :ballchain:

I don't suppose you should leave it to chance. If the occupant could take time out to find you on eBay, they could take it a step further.

I'd do a little social engineering with the person. So if the stealth door number is 13, I'd tell them I opened the account when temporarily staying with a relative at no 31, the brown house with the white picket fence (use google maps) You must have accidentally switched the digits when you typed it in. You forgot to change it when you moved out.

Ask if you can send a label so they can send you back the package. :thumb:

just sit it out and ignore the mssage...
you can think about possible solutions once any problem arises in reality :)

do not lie like you used to live there or nearby.
just say you will look into it and contact Ebay,in the mean time, please accept the return label to send it back

If I said anything at all.. it would be me blaming it on an eBay error.

"So THAT'S where our returns have been going. We haven't been able to track down the past 6 returns!"

Thanks for everyone who replied. It's all sorted now. Luckily whoever lived there just urged me to sort it out so it's done now. I reckon that nothing would have come to it even if they contacted eBay.

Pretty much. I really don't think that the person who lives at the address can do anything about it anyway. You know how hard it is to convince eBay of anything lol

Truth be told is there probably isn't anything she can really do even if she provided evidence to eBay. Imagine this. If you really hated a competitor and ⊗⊗⊗⊗d some docs to show you live at the competitors address then eBay would shut them down.

Slight variation of what you're describing is pretty common and it works. It's been discussed here. A seller will purposely create an account with the same details as their competitor, rack up tons of disputes, and get both accounts linked/taken down.

So it's not outside the realm of possibility that the lady really could have had Bradd's account shut down - probably without much effort.

Really? But it seems like such a simple thing to do in order to take out competition.

Not until it's too late. A "linkage" doesn't become evident until after both accounts have gone down.

So a call to Ebay showing proof of the fraud will not help then ?
