Default Why do ebay buyers ask if item is still for sale?

Dont understand, I have had two buyers ask me this within the last week. Not sure if its some kind of new scam or im being paranoid. But two buyers asking me if item is still for sale, Its not like gumtree where there is a possibility that the item has been sold, why dont they just hit buy it now? If it was sold it would not even be listed. Its not like they are green to ebay either, both buyers who messaged me have been registered on ebay for years....

Maybe they don’t want to ‘Buy it Now’ at the price you’re offering but instead make you an offer. I guess they’re just starting with a bit of ‘small talk’ to break the ice instead of just outright lowballing you with an offer and hoping you accept it.

British people are overly polite and this is just another example

I agree with you about being overly polite. The buyer did buy the item about 5 min after sending me the message before I could reply. I have had buyers that ask me would I take X amount, then 15 min later I see they bought the item at full price because they see they cant get the item anywhere else.

They've probably bought from dropshippers that had out of stock items listed and orders canceled. That's why they're asking if in stock.

they could have copied your items or have identical items listed elsewhere like FB ,just want to know if someone bought from them, they can buy or ask you to ship/
Lots of stupid games people play.
Once there is a guy who copied every body books ,marke them up and create his own shop on AMZN and Ebay

Buyers do this because they are programmed to. Other sites like Facebook marketplace and Offerup prompt this as a message. It is rather annoying to get 20 messages a day on marketplace. Is this still available?
