VAT threshold - when do ebay ask to register ?

Other than the obvious which is ebay asking you to register if you exceed 85k in sales in the UK (if you are a UK seller, not international in which case it's due immediately).

I have also read they ask way sooner.

50k, 60k, 70k, 80k ? when do they email the seller asking them to register and if they don't comply when do they put on the restrictions ? any one have hands on experience ? It happened at 81k, account was restricted. This was years ago. Even though I left it dormant at that stage as I didn't want to register. But i've read people get restricted at 50k, 60k even which makes absolutely no sense to me as you are way below the threshold.

When do YOU personally leave your stealth account dormant to bring that 12 month rolling turnover figure down ?

Never seen they ask to register on 60k etc its normally around 85k they gives you 30 days to provide vat no and after that you cant list new items

Always ways around it think I am sure you will find solution

I have gone over £84k last month. No contact from ebay until now.

One account I went over 100k and then they asked and I've just gone over 87K on another account I've not been asked for VAT NO however I've already advised my accountant to apply for VAT on the flat rate scheme.

If it's that close to the threshold and you are still listing items, or have items listed I would expect a call or email right after christmas.

Yes, there are myriads of cases where they ask sooner. For example, when you have only sold say £60,000 in the last 12 months. But this is never out of the blue. It is always preceded by a sustained spike in sales that allows eBay to accurately project your sales to go over the VAT threshold.

Just spread your sale in a way that any projections whatsoever does not see you hitting ~ £70,000, preferably less. Don't allow any spikes in sales.

I learned this from eBayorbust and Jamesnorth101. Sadly, I had lost several accounts to the dreaded VAT request before I approached both these living legends for help.

Once you get the VAT request, there's no going back.

Wanted to bump this thread.

If I am running a stealth account, can I give my real VAT number, or will this get me banned if the details don’t match? I think the VAT number can be searched on public records!
