Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

Hi guys

I ordered a £5 pizza from a company called Food Panda (similar to uber eats)

I paid by paypal but selected in the wrong name and address in the drop down menu (it was an old customer address) (which shouldn't matter for the order because food panda use the address in your food panda account they completely ignore the paypal address)

Payment was declined so I paid by card instead.

Now PayPal are insisting that I give the date of birth of this random customer of mine as that is the name and address I used (by mistake) and the implication is my account will be limited if I don't do that.

I called them explained that name and address was a mistake, the order was actually to me which I can prove with a receipt and nothing to do with that buyer and they said don't worry we will escalate and resolve it but I've got another email from paypal saying they insist on the date of birth of that customer which I don't know.

So what do I do? Make up a F⊗⊗⊗ date of birth and hope they don't / can't check it? Or call them again and explain again? Or dispute the transaction, get it cancelled through the dispute process which should then eliminate the need for the date of birth?

This is their email

Thank you for the response. The response which we received is not sufficient.

hmm I wonder if that random customer was alerted in some way and complained to PP and that's why you are on the hook for using the info...feels like it - dangerous

I've had transferwise ask for the receivers date of birth and address before I think it is some sort of regulation but I don't think it should apply if I simply want to cancel the transaction. Transferwise have the common sense approach of if you don't answer payment is reversed none of this account limit b.s.

I wouldn't normally be this careless but I pretty much only use paypal for buying now so I let my guard down however I do see the possibility that I may really need paypal again in the future so would like to resolve this and learn my lesson if possible.

Going forward I will use paypal as little as possible so that they can't pull this BS anymore.

I highly doubt they would be alerted that would be a breach of GDPR not to mention how impractical it would be to alert them. Plus the block happened instantly.

How would you guys try and resolve it? My 3 options:

1) Make up a date of birth

2) Call paypal again and explain again

3) dispute the transaction thereby getting a refund. having it cancelled and eliminating the need for the dob?

Btw this is a real paypal account not a stealth account so nothing to hide at all

If it’s real and not stealth just provide the dob.. I don’t think there’s any way around it

They aren't asking for MY date of birth they are asking for the RECIPIENTS date of birth (I accidentally clicked the wrong address in my paypal account).

This is a person I dealt with once and am no longer in contact with so can't get his date of birth and don't even want the transaction to proceed anyway I want it cancelled.

OP does not know his customer DOB,if he gives a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ one,Paypal will use it as an excuse to ban him.
There are a lot of scams these payment processors are facing,so get rid of bad accounts is what they must do

My account is pretty much only used for buying with no scams or funny business so nothing "bad" for paypal.

And like I said it's a real account not a stealth account.

Not sure how paypal expects to survive when ebay take card payment direct and so do food panda without subjecting the customer to all this B.S.

I understand giving a seller bs but I am a buyer not a seller.

I don't see how using paypal for uber eats / food panda is bad. These are the kind of transactions paypal makes huge profits from.

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

I am trying to escalate this issue higher up for a common sense solution not a follow the script solution.

Eventually my bank should return the declined payment so will be interesting to see what happens then. No payment = no need for date of birth.

It's a joke really that someone ordering a £5 pizza from a company they have used 100s of times before should be a huge security concern for paypal.

Forget the great train robbery of 1963 this is a £5 pizza robbery.

Everyone knows the way to steal a pizza is to wreck it and then say it was delivered that way lol you don't need to do credit card fraud for that.

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

The interesting thing is my paypal account is limited but I'm only prevented from closing the account. Everything else I can do. Send receive convert etc

fernendo 06-25-2022 10:20 AM

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

Maybe this issue will just fizzle out the only limitation on my paypal account is I can't close it and there is no deadline to provide the date of birth. Apparently the consequence of not providing it is the payment will be returned which is what I want anyway.

So maybe I can just ignore it and it will sort itself out who knows.

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

Oh I thought they were asking for yours. Are you sure this is directly from PayPal and not a scam? This sounds like a phishing scam. I’m just thinking logically because no website should never ask for the DOB of another person.

And I just read your post some more and I’m super confused.

This has to be a business account with multiple users on it?

And OP if you can’t provide that DOB I don’t think there’s a way around it. Just go stealth if your account is already limited

Here is a really interesting explanation that I thought I'd share:-

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

Turns out the name just happens to be the same as someone who has a UN arms embargo.

So the lesson is don't send a pizza to someone with a UN arms embargo and if you do don't pay with paypal.

I wish I was making this up

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

Oh wow I never thought it would be legal for PayPal to ask for someone else dob other than the account owner.

So OP there’s no way you can get this persons DOB?

How would you feel if a ebay seller you purchased from a few weeks ago contacted you and asked for your date of birth so they can give it to paypal when you might not have even used paypal to pay?

This explains it

And yes the persons name is the same name of someone with a US arms embargo

Re: Paypal demanding receivers date of birth

If there’s no way you can contact the person and get the DOB then I don’t think there’s any way around it. PayPal is strict with limitations they want exactly what they request.

3 things you can try though.

Contacting PayPal and explain that this is unreasonable information that you are requesting. (I doubt this would work)

Create a new PayPal account (Much easier)

Purchasing a stealth PayPal account from the marketplace.

True - with pp you can't close the account if there is an issue flag to be resolved

I can't believe you're gonna get nailed by PP because you ordered from a place called Food Panda...
