Mobile phone scam - Anyone had experience getting it IMEI blocked?

I recently sold a brand new network unlocked samsung on ebay. Buyer has scammed. I've reported it stolen to the police who have put it on their stolen property list but this doesn't blacklist it. Just if the police find come across it it will flag up. They advised i contact my network (it brand new and unlocked officer :mod:) Anyway i tried phoning the big networks on the off chance but i need the phone number(of course only the scammer has this). Has anyone been through similar and successfully got it blocked? If so how did you do it?

is the phone number registered to you? you should be able to call the provider - iD yourself - and deactivate it until you get a new sim card for you to use and reactivate the number...

It clearly states in the post it is new and unused.

In my opinion @paulfoltyn you are stuffed sorry.

Their are websites where you can block the IMEI number if you google it, these companies are generally the ones who can take off the carrier lock.

wouldn't they need the number to do that, my impression from the posters message is they don't have it.

You’re correct, the first thing you should do is make a note of the IMEI before shipping it to a buyer. Then brick it if they scam you.

I have the IMEI number. Its unlocked so it not "tied" to any network. Its brand new so i don't have any phone number linked to it. Only the scammer does once they put a SIM card in. I tried calling some of networks trying my luck but they all said i need the phone number too which kind of makes sense. If it was a used phone i'd know, or at least be able to find my phone number by asking a firend. So have you had any experience bricking a phone with the IMEI number only? If so, how?

I think so too, i assume even if bricked they still work abroad anyway but i'm hoping i can at least cause them some problems

For sure. I'm not familiar with these third party services, not sure how they would be able to brick a phone before it's activated via a SIM and then the scammer owns the IMEI I'd guess.

Whilst of no comfort to @paulfoltyn I've got to say that selling expensive electronic fills me with dread and not an area I'd consider.

We can't win them all lol. First time its happened with a phone, most scam attempts on me are absolutely stupid and they usually back out. My favourite is when they're a seller and dumb enough to do it on their seller account or in a way I can find the link. Makes karma hit them real hard :violin:

I would tell the buyer that your opening a police report and that the police will be in contact with him

The address it was posted to - was that his real address?

And where did you yourself buy the phone from?
