Lost SMS Access on Stealth Accounts
 

Hi everyone, I have several UK stealth accounts that now require SMS verification to log in, but I no longer have access to the associated mobile numbers. What steps can I take to recover access to these accounts and prevent potential suspension?

Send them an email that you lost your phone and you want to change the phone number, then they will ask for your ID document

Rarely....and remember you will need an NI number after passing £1740 in sales now.

You are in US and your accounts are in UK??

Maybe OP is not even in USA.

That being said, there are a bunch of us on the forum who have accounts in UK and US - not abnormal...

You still have your pw right? Login works but requires the SMS verification only?

Is there an option for another way via e-mail?

No, eBay has got stupid about this and gives you all of the options upfront, which may or may not include the email option. I think that I have only seen the email option on accounts that are some years old and not the newer ones.

If you are lucky you get the email option, but if not and you don't have the phone number displayed, the only option is to submit ID if you click the option at the bottom that says something like "I have a new phone number".

These are accounts where I'm logging in on a fresh browser so that isn't it.

Also, if I log in on an "established" browser on which I haven't clicked the "Trust this browser" button on signing in before, I still get it. I had that happen just today in fact.

Confirm the email on the account and they send the verification by email

Is it eBay or paypal you nees to update the number on?

Paypal is easy

EBay has an option to update the number via the log in page if you know the right password

While not helpful in this case, but moving forward, I always save my Cookies on accounts that have had successful logins with etc, for future use and in case say my computer has a melt down or gets stolen etc.

If I am getting the text message only log in option, I import those cookies into the browser I am using to log in to said account, et voila, the email verification appears.

I didn't even realise that you could still confirm.the eBay email, but after doing do it changed nothing for me; still SMS only.

Only if you have cookies in place and still even then not always for the UK ebay accounts

Does it still require SMS verification if you log in using an IP that was successful before?

If this is happening to a bunch you're being fingerprinted. Read up on akamai fingerprinting. They can link cross devices in some instances. :bird:

Yes but you can't do it after they ask you for SMS verification, needs to be done before that.

Used to be a way of sparking it - maybe different browsers or repeat trying...
