Casecading ? 1 modem 2 routers
 

Anyone doing this , as i understand it you can use one modem with 2 routers creating different ip's for each router, on the main router you use cable and the second wireless or cable

i would prefer to do this instead of using one computer with different user accounts so just thought i would ask if anyone has tried it

No, still one IP. The ISP uses the mac address to create the ip from their end. It uses the router mac, yes. But the router itself does not create the ip

If this worked it would be a snap to get ips. Have 6 routers

But, sorry, no go. Still one ip

You must set up additional accounts with your Internet provider. You can have multiple Internet accounts in one home, but it's a bit on the expensive side.

Thanks for the replys, ip address are deffo not the same , as you have to set each router up with a differnt IP address other wise it does not work as the IP's clash

You do not need two accounts either.


i have two router here so im going to try it later on but im almost sure it will work .

It wont work. The router does not create the IP, sorry. You are misunderstanding how it works. Nothing in your home creates the IP. Its done by the provider

1 router and 1 ISP = 1 IP
2 routers and 1 ISP = 1 IP
25 routers and 1 ISP = 1 IP

If all it took was extra routers to make new IPs we could all build router bays for $80 and have half dozen IPs.

Just doesn't work that way, sorry. Be cool if it did.

Will plugging in directly to the modem give one IP address and the router give off another?

No. The internet service provider assigns the IP. There is nothing you can do in your home to make more then one IP

They use the MAC address from router to assign the IP. You can change that and get a different one. But only one will be assigned throughout the whole house no matter what hardware you use or how you use it. If you have 3 routers they will just use the mac off one.

Now some cable modems with usb will give a different ip for cat cable and usb cable. But again. 2 routers or 200. One IP.

Only problem i have right now is that whenever i change my mac address i get no internet access at all. I have to put in the original mac address back in to access the internet again

Once you change the mac are you switching the modem/router off for 30 seconds ? and allowing it to reconnect .

Sometimes it wont take the mac you are trying. You can let the router do the work for you.
What you can try: First write down the IP and mac combo you have now so you can go back to it.

Reset the router. Usually a tiny button on back or bottom you press for 30 seconds or so. This will clear everything. Including passwords and so on, so that will need to be redone. But it should give you a new mac and also a new IP

If you write this info down you can cycle through this procedure a few times and you will have a list of macs and IPs. And when ever you want a given IP you can enter that mac and reboot router

I'm using two routers, and for each one there is a seperate IP.

I'm 100% sure. It's different on IP burger each time.

Not at the same time. But a different router will give another IP just like changing MAC. But one modem, one IP at one time.

Although it's a fast way to run stealth. eg, change pc user accounts, log onto router associated with that account and that's it.

Ya, I've thought about doing that. I have a few wifi routers I could use and do that. Too lazy to hook it all up. And I can change the macs remotely without getting off my lazy butt

Hi guys I had this bright idea a few months back, and brought myself 25 routers.
Only problem is Virgin will not let you connect on the internet with more then 3 different routers :(
But still now I have 1 IP running direct from the modem.
3 IP's running off my other 3 routors ( only 1 can be connected at a time.)
So in total I have 4 IP's :) but 22 bricks :(

Cant wait to come off the 1 year contract, then I'm a free man, and will jump ship to sky or BT.

You can just change the mac on one in a couple minutes. Dont actually need to do it with hardware

Shame they only allow a set number of routers, never heard of that before

just use dial up - different ip every time! slow but easy! just to list etc.
otherwise use you cell phone to tether.

Well I read in other forums that they dont like you shanging the mac all the time and it raises a red flag with them, and the fard team start looking into your account.

It just would not connect. It's like if I have no internet at all.

However like I said just got a few months left with them, then I'm off :amen:
