Paypal called me today & i'm scared!!!!

Guys paypal called me today and asked me if I have any problems with paypal and I said no. they said to me that they see im selling items on ebay and asked if I had a supplier. I said no.. I buy my items from companies here (i did name a few companies).. they said thanks for using paypal. I said thank for calling and enjoy the sunshine.. I'm so worried that they may limit my account. What do you guys think?

mattytman 04-21-2011 10:58 AM

And breatheeeee......

It's cool. You answered the phone and they're happy enough.

This is pretty standard nowadays. You did the right thing.

Had you not answered, or had you registered with an out of date number etc...bang...limitation. Had you said "No, I'm not selling on eBay etc", bang, limitation (because they think someone would be using your account).

Everything is groovy because you did the right thing. IF you get limited, in 99.9999999999999% sure it's nothing to do with that call :amen::clap:

thanks for reassuring me.. I've been hitting the refresh button on my hotmail account ever since to see if I receive any messages from them.. i will try to relax though im still worried

mattytman 04-21-2011 11:15 AM

Honestly, you have nothing to worry over.

They seem happy that you are in control of your own account because you answered the phone and agreed that you sell on eBay. They're happy that you have accurate details (phone etc). If you hadn't answered they would try a few more times and then send you a warning of limitation your account saying you had 'potentially out of date information' and to 'update your account details'. If you didn't then you would be limited. If the number didn't exist when they try to contact you they would do the same thing or give you an instant limitation.

They're even happy that you don't have a 'supplier' because otherwise they would be pushing you into a business account

I bought some golf balls from eBay at Xmas...only £6.00 with £3 p&p. I had used the same PP account to purchase most of my Xmas shopping and spend about £700. PP called me up after purchasing those golf balls and made sure it was me. Lol. It seems so random. But you're safe IMHO :juggle:

BTW, Hotmail is not great for Stealth accounts. Not sure if you're using stealthly ways - lol - but if you are I would stick to GMail and possibly Yahoo for Cookie/Beacon reasons. :)

rsot 04-21-2011 12:03 PM

You spoke to pa yp al - DONT CHANGE ANYTHING. Just breathe and wait and see. You start fooling around with your account and you could draw flags. Relax and be patient.

ets 04-21-2011 12:30 PM

thank you rsot! I'm not going to panic!

mattytman 04-21-2011 12:35 PM

Hi - yes - don't change anything on that account.

Sorry, I should have made that clearer

Just, for future accounts, best to use gmail :D

Perhaps they are checking your contact details are still up to date, perhaps they are checking you are aware of the activity on your accounts or whether you are selling as for profit and have a supplier. :noidea:

Would love to know the reason!

i just told them that I buy them in the stores for resale on ebay which is what I do

ShadyOne 04-21-2011 01:04 PM

^^^

Sorry I meant I would love to know the real reason they phoned you.

asphyx 04-21-2011 04:13 PM

perhaps it wasn't pp. Your phone number is on the invoices/pp receipts your customers receive...

when I get a call like this (from pp or a bank, cc company etc) I normally ask "what did I buy on Monday?" if they are genuine they will answer.

ShadyOne 04-21-2011 04:17 PM

^^ I have heard from other 'sources' that PP do in fact phone people for things just like this.

By the way I wasn't trying to be cool by saying 'sources'!

Though I can tell you thought I was cool didn't you asphyx.

asphyx 04-21-2011 04:50 PM

It's more the "other" that worries me... what "other sources"..??

i am positive pp call sometimes, i just wanted to share some anti-phishing technique..

I just wanted to add my 2p to this.

I have one gmail mail for my personal stuff plus ...let me count them... 43 hotmail acc between ebaay+pp at the moment and I never had any problem with beacons, cookies and other tracking stuff.
I manage all these email with Thunderbird (it's free here: Thunderbird ).

If you plan to do the same please note VERY IMPORTANT: set (in hotmail in the browser) to see the messages in plain text (no html, if the setting is still there, they change hotmail some months ago) then in Thunderbird Settings again set to see and send messages in plain text only (NO html, NO smilies, NO images, nothing).
This way you get only the plain text from the messages with no beacon and other $hit and to your buyers you send a plain text email, less likely to be blocked by their spam filter.

Been using the same acc (email and ebbay/pp) for two years no problem.

Haha lol

All I meant was I used google, it gives you a lot of answers, some people never use it though.

Thanks for the fishing technique but I would probably suspect something when they started asking me for my paypal password and bank details.

Imback2010 04-21-2011 05:14 PM

@est

How old is this paypal account?

asphyx 04-21-2011 05:18 PM

i see, how about if they call you again and tell you "Hello Mr Shady, we called last week on Thu, you sold **article name from ebay** to ebay member **ebay member name fished form your feedback** we wanted to confirm some details..." you think it's them wouldn't you?
it will be harvest time.

but I am sure it's not the case this time with ets.

What would they be harvesting from me?

I meant "Mr est"... not "Mr Shady". It's a long shot but building confidence is the key for con artists.

ShadyOne 04-21-2011 05:32 PM

^^^Yeah I think my point was I don't think PP ask for such personal information over the phone.
