unemployed - banks not allowing me to open an account
 

ive currently just garduated and am unemployed at the moment, ive tried to setup a few basic bank accounts however the two that i have asked require some funds to be payed into the account before they can open up the accounts, i wanted to know is there anyway around this?

weird... I opened Nationwide account fine when i stated myself as being unemployed?
The only downside is you wont be able to get a overdraft.

I did it all online with no problems.

I know Halifax wanted £100 which you get to use immediately anyway, which i was told is to make sure you were going to use the account as they are so easy to open.

£10 should do it

That's not allowed Because of the European Union, unemployed has rights to having a bank account.

Provided everything is OK, you should be able to have an account.

Have you tried RBS, NatWest? Ideally you want an account that requires little to small deposit to get you started.
Bully tactics by the bank to do that :mad:

To test this I have just opened an account with Nationwide.

I put myself down as a home maker on £5000 a year

nationwide is what im going to go for next, do you have to go in branch and show id etc? and what account was it you applied for?

i had natwest/rbs accounts previously but they closed the accounts without any reason as to why. I applied for them as a student ages ago though.

The bank that stated i need some regular income going through the account before they could open one for me were thinbanking.

Will do GT, im waiting for my santander current account to come through first though.

Do banks get suspicious when your applying for lots of bank accounts in one go/regular basis?

Do you owe some banks any money? Student overdraft? Why would they close your account, did you stop using the account or something...surely you had your benefits or something paid into a bank account? :)

im un employed. i can just walk into bank open and close accounts as i wish. quite nifty and good :D

You may want to try a new bank, because if this was true banks would have a hard time getting the number of customers they do. This is why they always offer the $100 signing bonus and all that stuff. To get people into their bank. If you are trying to do it online, and getting denied, just walk in and try another.

Ulsterbank step Account is good. No money needed to open Account . Do it online. They are in Northern Ireland but it's still UK so it's ok. Go for Step Account and as it's a basic account anyone can have 1. I have 4 of them :clap:

Also it can accept DD so no prob there

i really aint got a clue why they have closed it, im thinking its due to inactivity, but i dont know.

TSB recentley sent me a letter also and i had money running through the account so im not sure whats going on i will go chat to them next week.

I really cant be bothered going in branch to setup a bank account, would prefer to do it online without having to show any id as my passport is out of date and cant be bothered renewing it. I already have an ulster bank account, and it is the only account i have left. Its good for pp.

I have transferred one of my current accounts to santander but ive still not recieved any letter on ehether they are takin me on yet.

I think im going to be running out of banks to apply for accounts soon though.

This bank is good to go for Stealth yes?

have you tired Halifax Easycash ?

I setup a halifax account online around 18 months ago, hoever they request i go in branch to supply some id, which i never got round to doing, i will have to get this sorted out also.

SO they acutally offered you the accounts on the provision you add funds, go figure most banks are like that to open an account, JUST POP A POUND IN.


If you have the letter or account number for the HX then just sort it out but like most accounts Dont forget you quid


It is law that you can have a bank account here, however it does not mean it has to be free,

I could swear i posted a post regarding bank accounts, which seems to have been removed?

i know what the post was regarding...i wonder if someone will be able to tell me (perhaps GB or the person who removed my post) if i will get the answer if i join the stealth programme?

and what else i could expect from the programme? more hidden knowlege??

Got my cheque book and card this morning. Had to show ID at the local branch plus utility - job done
