Second class stamps to rise sharply to 55p, under Royal Mail plans

''The national mail organisation said it is hoping to increase second class stamps by 53 per cent from 36p to 55p, and insisted that the increase was still “affordable” for “vulnerable groups”.
Royal Mail, which posted group profits of £1million a day for the most recent six month period, would then be free to increase the price of second class stamps from as early as April.
The price of second class stamps would then rise further by inflation every year for seven years. There would be no limit on the price of a first class stamp, which currently costs 46p.
Such a large price rise could lead to consumers stockpiling books of second class stamps to take advantage of the cheaper cost of postage before prices go up.
Ofcom, the postal regulator, is now considering the request, and will decide whether to give it green light in a few weeks’ time.''

Postal price increases are inevitable. With mail volumes dropping, they need to make up for it or else get the taxpayers to subsidize it (I believe it is the same in the USA and UK - the postal service is a government agency but is expected to support itself).

Here in the US, they are raising prices, closing branches, consolidating sorting centers and there is even talk of eliminating Saturday delivery.

I don't worry about the affect on my internet business, because as long as we are all in the same boat, I can still compete.

it always a bummer when postages goes up specially with the cheaper items

Daylight robbery to increase their profits sounds like a typical day in RM HQ.

Yes, but the big question is will e/b increase their imposed limits on how much sellers are allowed to charge for shipping?

Somehow I doubt it........and so the noose tightens a little more.

agreed. i hate the postal limits they put on things, it means less profit on the postage. even if you only made 50p on each sale, over a thousand items, thats alot :/

This increase is bad and greedy. RM just increased their prices last year already!

Nothing we can do about it, as we all need to use RM in the UK at some point.

I just have to up my prices too then...
