New bank account rejected
 

I applied online for a current account wuth a bank i already have an account with. They sent me a letter saying no because i failed a credit check.

Should i just wait now until my credit rating improves or do you know of any banks that are flexible?

You should only apply for basic current accounts not the standard current account as the former does not require a credit check only ID verification.

Many users have said Barclays is fine. I'll wait to see if others chime in on this one. Things might've changed since I was last on here.

Too hit and miss with Barclays, very inconsistent, there are much better options available

How many basic current accounts you can have in one bank?

As many as they will allow and that you can justify to them if they ask why you are opening more.

Three is normal without them asking too many questions

I applied for a halifax basic account about a month or so ago. I received a letter in the post saying that i needed to take some ID into a branch. I did this about 3 weeks ago. They dissapeared into the back with my documents. I imagine this was to photocopy them :)

They then sent me on my way and ive heard nothing back at all. Is this the normal procedure for opening basic accounts with them? And if anyone has encountered this, how long does it take to hear back from them?

Barclays current or basic accounts are fine. I have both and no probs. I also have a Santander account that is good too. Have got a Cooperative account too but havent attached it yet so not sure on that one yet but a lot of people say they are good.:bounce:

Some basic accounts require a credit check. Natwest told me that they still do one so I walked out (since I was rejected by HSBC for a business account and did not want to hurt my record again) and went to Barclays. Then they opened me 5 account in one go (what can I say? The lady seemed to like me a lot...) and they have been working perfectly with eBay/Paypal stealth.

All banks i know will tell you they do a credit check even on basic accounts


For basics accounts most banks do a credit score including natwest which is not the same thing as a credit check but all the same they will tell you , you will get credit checked if you ask before hand, for a normal current account you will be credit checked and sometimes both.

A credit score has nothing to do with your record and credit check does.

The lady at Barclays told me that no such checks/scores were done at all for basic accounts, that I only needed to bring my ID and address proof. Perhaps she was just more honest then most?

And the staff at Natwest told me that they did the same checks for a basic account as with a current account. That is why I walked.

When i first applied for a Halifax Basic Eplan account, I had to take my documents into the bank, but they told me i had to deposit £100 in the account before they would send me my card in the mail.
I did just that and was able to use the £100 straight away and received my card in a few days.
My Second Basic eplan account, i didn't need to do this, they just sent everything to me... so perhaps you need to clarify with your bank if you need to deposit the money in, and if so they can give you your account number to do it.

Apparently it is just to check if you genuinely going to use the account.

That's a lot of accounts for someone who is not credit-worthy enough for an overdraft!

I was just honest about my eBay plans, and said that they would not have to worry about any accounts going unused. Sometimes honesty really is the best policy.
