Virgin Media Broadband routers IP address changes
 

Spoke to a supervisor in the Virgin Media technical support today for almost an hour about IP addresses, changing them, VPNs etc... he was excellent for a change. I asked how to change my IP addy or if it was possible .
I'd tried loads of ways following forum advice, but each method wouldn't work and change the IP addy... he told me that even though its 'dynamic' on Virgin Media Broadband, they only have a certain number of IP addys to dish out per district or cluster of customers, and they DO NOT change if they are hard pressed for other numbers to release.

the IP addy for your router will remain the same. HOWEVER, he told me on Juy 24th, they are shutting down their serviers and rebooting them, and all the IP addys should change then... although there is no guarantee that everyone will get a new one.

Might be a good time to sign up for Virgin Media Broadband and get the installation done in time for 24th .... then cancel it under the 14 days change your mind option... benefit is you have a whole 2 weeks to register new accounts on a new IP address...

Seems like a lot of hassle, especially as the price of dongles are dirt cheap, and tethering a phone is commonplace.

i use virgin media and can change ip 3 times every 24 hours on my setup without filling the host table. However a dongle is great and no hassle so i use a dongle. why faff about for about a fiver a month.

Which dongle and provider is it please??

I use a giffgaff Sim in an O2 E-160 dongle (O2 dob ngles like this are unlocked apparently bought second hand) £5 per month for 500 Mb.

Doesn't GiffGaff work on the 02 network??? so an 02 dongle would be OK for a Giff Gaff data sim??

giffgaff work in o2 anyway but cracked dongles are good.

i think minimum O2 purchase is a tenner so giffgaff is half price if you dnt exceed data

do i wait for a few days to see if they are goijg to reset the servers and i may :bored: get a new ip ?

or is there a way to change the ip ?

i have a super hub and i cant seem to find the stage to change the mac or ip in there ?

i can see the info i just cant click it or select it for change any place ?

stuck on this section until i change ip... as pretty much everything counts on it

will using a remote ip changer ie; easy hide ip work ?

changing the IP address on Virgin Cable is difficult. I used to have their service (which is generally excellent), but thankfully (for ebaying) their service isn't available in my area. i've googled their superhub, and although there are advanced settings, i doubt that it will enable you to change the router's MAC address. From memory, the MAC address of their routers is specific to your account, so even if you could change it, you might end up with no service. I don't think they supply you with a username/password to connect to their network (which is why the MAC address is specific to you) so you can't use other equipment to connect.

Best advice? Use a dongle, or a smart phone to tether


(and before someone inevitably comes in telling me i'm wrong, i spent many many hours a few years ago looking at information about hacking their old hubs/modems, spoofing MAC addresses of working accounts and bonding more than 1 of there modem/routers to get a quicker connection)

Yer what you say here is correct.

When i had virgin i.p was static and you canot change the i.p, i could only change mac of router not modem so it was usless.

checking something out a few years ago could have little worth now, things change all the time.

Will the IP change if you were to use a new super hub (not supplied by Virgin)?

And where would you get this superhub from?

I seen some brand new one on sale form eB, completely unused, and I know a mate who used to work for Virgin also offer me one...

I don't think you'd be able to do much with it. It's not like you can put a username and password in and just connect. Virgin cable broadband doesn't work like ADSL broadband.

i was going to ask about that as i brought a super hub with me from an old address and told my virgin installer i had left it behind in my old flat.... but i have it stashed in a cuboard somewhere as i planned to bay it, now i might just dig it out for a play around and see whats what

it looks like i'm getting a super hub in the next few days from vermin (double dratt) Looking at postings on here and t'interweb it appears i can go into modem mode clone a mac address from a new pc NIC (unused mac address) and that will get a new Ip address (clone the new mac address ?). What i haven't found out is if i change back to modem/router mode will it use the new Ip address i got when in modem only mode? i also would like to know when i change back from modem only to modem router mode will it change back to its own mac address ?

The MAC address on the Superhub is directly connected to your account. If you change it, you'll more than likely lose your service (changing it back should restore it though). You might get away with using a cloned MAC address (presuming that MAC address is linked to a working account). If I was in any of your positions I'd be looking at dongles or tethering.

Oh, OK. So with Virgin you don't have access to the hub to set up on your own?

Ty Dave. Looking at super hub postings there are people saying that when you go into modem only mode you can clone your mac address to the super hub so what your saying is different. I use a dongle now but still want the facillity of getting a new IP on virmin.
The super hub is being delivered on Tuesday so I may just continue to use the current modem and my DLink dir-615 router. The boss is very miuch against me changing from virmin because when we had new plastic sofficts and gutters the old BT line was removed and she is very reluctant to replace it with another BT line. I use a giffgaff dongle now and its fine.
Hence my questions about the superhub.

I've not got a superhub, i'm just going off some old knowledge of their modems and new knowledge through some research.

I don't think it matters what mode it's in. If you change the ISP-facing MAC address it'll stop working, unless you can get your hands on a cloned (and working) one. I could be completely wrong of course, but my understanding is that the ISP-facing MAC address is effectively your username and password to connect to their service (which is why changing it won't work, unless it's a cloned and working one with their service).

brought a former super hub with me when i moved from old flat to my house

dug out the hub and tried it today and connection excellent but no internet access :mad2:

Some providers can/will set a new hub up at there end if you call them and tell them the one they supplied has gone down.

The Super Hub arrived today
1) I set it up in Modem/Router mode and it found gave me a fresh IP address (88.12.43.123 yes its a false address for this example ). I was unable to change clone a mac address in Modem/Router mode.

2) using the same network card with same mac address i changed to Modem only mode. It gave me a new IP address. (82.27.74.139 yes its a false address for this example )

3) I then used a different mac address rebboted allin modem only mode and it gave me a new Ip address. (80.74.213.552 yes its a false address for this example )

4) i changed back to Modem/Router different network card (with new different mac address) Back came the that i got in 1) above. no matter which network card or mac address I changed i still kept getting Ip address from 1) (88.12.43.123 yes its a false address for this example )

5) going back to Modem only mode I made . Ip change number 4 and then connected a Dlink wireless router (dir 615 from virgin) as wifi. (88.123.77.42 yes its a false address for this example).

So now I'm in the same position as i was when i used old virgin modem and their wireless router, except i now get 30 download speed instead of up to 10 for £3.61 cheaper on my Virmin package.

I'm happy and the boss like the drop in costs and still no over head wires to our home. I hope this helps

Go with orange you can login and change the IP address of the router and have a reserved IP address per user account.

Al I do is have different user accounts with a text file of the last 3 digits of the IP address per user account when I login to that specific account I remember to login to the router change the IP reset the router and continue.

Really simple to do yea its a pain resetting the router each time i switch user accounts but works well!

24th has come and gone... no new ip if a reset has taken place :suspicious:

^^ hmm, interesting, not sure if this is related or not, but the time-frame seems coincindental so here it is: have xx number of IP log entries for legit ebay acct, and likewise xx number of IP log entries for stealth acct. Today was the first time ever, after re-setting router, that the SAME IP- one that had previously been used for stealth a few days prior- showed up when re-set router to use original acct.

I can update you on the IP address issue - the servers updated on 24th July.... and I never got a new IP addy - it remained the same.
I am now using expatshield before I do any surfing. it gives me a new IP addy each time.
Ive also decided to go ahead and get a dongle and shove in a cheap giffgaff (oh how I wish they would change that name, as much as I wish the Archbishop of Canterbury would trim his beard and eyebrows)..... SIM and use that - found its much easier than messing about and becoming a Puter Geek.
