I find that I frequently get these conmen when I deliberately overprice a product so that it does not sell... perhaps they think that the seller will be more likely to comply with a higher priced item that they would like to be rid of, and that nobody else would be interested in?

Two words: Western Union - mention of that and you must delete.

Offering to pay £50 shipping for a phone - bargain. ;)

I've never had someone directly trying to scam me (yet).

I get loads of phishing emails asking me log into my ebay or Paypal account and of course I've won the Nigerian Lottery 5 times already this year.

Sorry - why would you overprice so as it won't sell?

I would imagine he sells the same item on another account at a lower price, making it look like a bit of a bargain compared to the higher priced one.

That would seem the most probable reason but best to wait for Elijah's reply.

I got another message on ebay from another user id saying..

Thanks for your reply,At the moment i am not in the country and,I will be paying you the sum of £160.00 for the item and to my Pastor at West Africa that come for commission, I will be transferring the money through PayPal. If the offer is ok by you do get back to me with your PayPal full name and email address, so that i can immediately transfer the money to your account. Have a nice day and hope to read from you. Many Thanks...

Looks like the scammer hacked two ebay accounts

The main reason why you will get them targeting this account. They see you as a new seller who has no idea what really goes on the world wide web. But he doesn't know the real truth.. If you have time play a little game with him - suggest to send the item for free! :pop2::attention:

I rember when I opened my first shop (actual brick and mortar type shop) - on the 2nd day a bloke walks in after standing outside for around 10 minutes. He starts to look for the most expensive items, and asks me for advice. I am looking too happy, as I can see the money in front of my eyes. He keeps going the bill is getting over a £1000,00. I can't believe my luck, 2nd day of my new business and I am about to make a nice profit in just 20 minutes. As he comes to the end he ask is it's ok for his friend to come in and starts putting the stuff in the car while we sort the payment. I said 'NO' you can pay first then I will help you load it in the car.

He pulls out a business cheque book.. I say sorry but I don't accept cheques without the guarantee card. Oh, he says this is business cheque you don't need a card - it's like cash. Again, I say sorry but no card, no sale sorry. He then tells me to call the boss - well, I reply 'I am the boss' - You can see the situation is changing every second and now he is getting pissed off with me. It was not going to his plan - he didn't think I was the boss - he thought I was some little worker - who would be so happy to phone his boss after the sale to say how good he is but only to get fired few hours later.

I make one more attempt to save the sale - so I ring my bank to ask if what he is saying is true. They ask me to provide the number on the book - bingo - the book is stolen from a local company few days before.

He can see my face has changed, and at the same point one of my friends walks into the shop (he was bigger then him, and so was I) - he goes for the exit never to be seen again....

I never thought of that one before... might try it some time to increase my sales of other items. ;)

But that isn't what I do it for currently; it is part of my technique in getting to list 100 items per day on a new account without getting taken down by eBay. And I'd rather that the item doesn't sell since it is generally fictional lol... so it would be a bit hard to post it to a winning buyer. If I get one of these guys then it is pretty funny and convenient for me as once they send me that message, I know the drill lol...
