Bought a Laptop via Stealth DUH!!!!

Hi Everyone,
I know that laptops are high risk but I wanted a cheapie for one of my daughters so I bought via my stealth ebay and paid via stealth paypal for delivery to our real address.
Of course I realised that the laptop seller would be worried about sending to any address other than paypal so I messaged to say to reassure him I will leave feedback in advance.
So I left 5stars + positive, then he flat out refuses to ship to any other address except a non-existent paypal address.

I have dug myself a bit of a hole here.

I even suggested that he refunds the payment and invoices our alternative (real) paypal account but the guy is very fixed and wont budge.

Any ideas please?

get his email or a telephone number for him for a start

once you have that, then you can explain a little better

the seller is well within his rights legally (pay pal terms) and morally

for all he knows you could be trying it

best bet is to have a chat, and if he refuses than ask nicely for a refund

good comms is key

I agree with GTB, a nice chat on the phone usually will boost great amount of trust between the buyer and seller. Give it a shot

Depending on how much the item is worth, would you be willing to just ship to the address on the stealth account. Assuming its within reach? Normally if you ring the person and say the shipping company has made a mistake they are more than happy for you to pick the item up.

OP is the buyer, not the seller.

I'd request to cancel the transaction and get a refund.

When I was on EB using my old account before it got limited I never sent out items to anything other than registered PP address, so I can see the sellers points. I would be iffy as well. Surprised he wouldn't send you an invoice to your real PP and then post it to the address registered on that, that would to me seem the route that kept everyone happy.

1. You shouldnt leave 5+ stars positive without the item in hand - does NOT look good for future claims - sorry to be clear about this but it's not right.

2. That being said - if he has not shipped it, yes e-mail and call. He is smart to only ship to the verified pp address because he is not covered otherwise (As a seller, I would do the same thing).

3. If you intend to buy for a different address, make moves to set up a buyer account to that address that is new and linkfree if possible. If the address has been banned, try a variation of the address.

I have many buyer only ebay accounts with postal boxes etc for these transactions.

Is this available to you in the UK?

If he cancels this you might consider this if you can.

Thank you all for your contributions, particularly the open comms.
The challenge was that he had printed the label and been charged for it so we did the refund paypal and reinvoice to my home paypal and I paid him a few pounds extra to cover his reprinting of a new desptach label. Anyway all happy and lessons learnt

GTB 04-26-2013 04:58 PM

good to hear the happy ending pal

lesson learned

IF the address for item to be shipped to is in the ebay message system seller can ship there with seller protection from ebay but that will mean ebay has your real address but it wont hurt you I dont think but it is in the terms of service that you can ship to an address in the ebay messages and have protection. You need to three way or have the seller call ebay to confirm this

GreenBean 04-26-2013 06:52 PM

Hence the risk of thinking of doing a deal with an address not on paypal.

Seller might have even reported this to ebay and thus damage the account.

Line up all your ducks for future purchases and ensure the address is acceptable.

Not wise to try that for a UK account.

Address variations flop. Better to be link free

Why don't you post the laptop specs here, I'm sure a proper retailer like Amazon or Dell has better deals available. You can just cancel the purchase under the distance selling regulations, get a better deal and still save your account.

a.v.limited 04-27-2013 09:20 AM

well you can get all the info you want but at end of day seller is correct, too many dodgy buyers

goods only sent to paypal address or he wont be covered

chrisfo 04-27-2013 09:41 AM

I brought off a stealth account, one seller agreed to send the item to another address while the other didn't get back to me until after he shipped the item. I ended up driving all the way to the stealth address to pick the item up.

Won't be doing that again.

But sellers should really keep in contact with buyer's.

Buyers should not try to compromise sellers.

Two way thing.

Communication is essential.

But some thought should go into buying off ebay when there are address issues
especially on stealth accounts.

Totally agree BUT sellers must make sure they read any messages from a buyer before shipping an item.

Probably using a third part software.

sellers should check messages all the time

but dont expect to buy an item, then send a seller a message expecting them to check there messages before shipping

that's just silly

The item was brought over the weekend and didn't get a reply until the item as already delivered and even then a few days after.

That's just plan rude!

Totally agree that the buyer should ask any questions before buying the item but this item would of been sold before I could of got a reply so had no choice.

GreenBean 04-27-2013 10:43 AM

@christfo

That makes no sense. What happened?

From what I understand about the OP, the item has not been shipped yet.
