'stealth' bank transfers? Is it possible?

Greetings

This is a bit of a UK related question, I've had a buyer on eBay wanting to pay for an item via bank transfer. I wanted to know if rather than give him my own bank details which might make him suspicious, would it be possible to give him my 'stealth' details to make the bank transfer to?

Obviously my bank account is real with a real account number and sort code, but the name I'm registered with on my eBay account is my stealth name which as far as eBay / Paypal are concerned is linked to my bank account. Will the transfer work if I give the buyer the correct sort code and account number but my 'stealth' name or will it be declined by the bank when he tries to do the transfer?

many thanks

Jon

i've done this before. i didn't even give the buyer my name, just my sort code and account number. but seeing as paypal can pay in using a stealthy name, then anyone else should be able to as well. if the buyer is going to do the transfer online, i've never seen halifax/rbs/nationwide/barclays ask for a name, so you should be ok. the only problem you might come into is if they go into a branch and transfer the money there.

so, try as best as you can to not give him a name, just a sort code and account number

99% of banks will take just the sort code and account number as 'dave said.

Keep in mind SELLERS' protection.

Your choice.

Be aware before you decide.

I love having to Google things to figure out what the heck my friends "across the pond" (and in GB's case, across the world) are saying....

A sort code is the name given by both the British and Irish banking industry to the bank codes.

We call that routing numbers here :p

Unless you have an obscene amount (like 5K+ for some banks, 10K+ for others), many bank transfers will go through with stealth info. Just for sake of clarity, where is your buyer located? One of the popular country origins of scams?

I'm always suspicious of someone wanting pay outside the confines of acceptable payments allowed on eBay. If it was friends and family wanting to pay me money fine....a complete stranger? Call me paranoid but I don't like giving out any of my account details willy nilly! What's wrong with a postal order?

I'm reminded of the Fonejacker!
