User Account and linking

About 2 years ago i got an ebay account limited (Genuine) because i purchased a laptop from ebay, the laptop had what i though to be a new windows install so i created a user account same as my old one a transfered some cookies, i logged in to ebay and was told to ring them.

i rang ebay and they said i was using a different computer, i said yes i had just purchased it from ebay, you can check this, the rep said o.k not problem.

Two days later i was banned, go figure!!

anyway since then i have taken an extra level of precaution by changing the computer name for each windows user account when i log in so it looks as if its a totally different computer for th one i just used

I thought i would share this for the paranoid (like me) and because its Christmas

you can change you computer name by going to

Run/Redit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/windows NT/ Click on CurrentVersion

look in the box on the right for

RegisteredOrganization

RegisteredOwner

double click and enter a new name in the boxes

I think there is an app on firefox that makes everything look different and others that will stop anything showing up on the other end. Not used them much though, as we are protected by privacy laws as to what at a website can look at.

You did not need to do all you did with that lap top and they probably thought you were acting suspicious

Sorry you have lost me, how does firefox help if you change computers ?

If yo change computers and sign in to ebay you will most likely be asked to ring in, what i describe will prevent that.

Sorry I might not be up-to-date with the Stealth Book but as far as I have seen in the forum, computer name is NOT an issue.

Cookies, IPs could be a problem but Ebay is not checking computer name or MAC address.

Maybe you log into ebay (with your new laptop) from a public network, wifi or from a completely different IP?

Correct on computer name - it is NOT an issue
