Can I be a business with a basic account? ie register with the tax to pay tax on items sold on my basic account on ebay?

You can use what ever bank account you want so long as it accept mismatching name deposits. For tax advise, you will have to speak to a professional tax adviser.

I mean basic ebay account, just because of the info ebay ask for when setting up a business account. I dont see how I could provide this information if Im using a variation of my real name or would I give the tax and ebay different info?

I don't see how tax man can login to your eBay and PayPal accounts and view the names, nor do they care or would waste tax payers money on something so insignificant. Just pay tax and use eBay as your personal ATM

Basic eB account works but you should evaluate based on your level of activity. Taxes are taxes - questions should be addressed to tax professional, not hte forum

Thanks, I was more worried that ebay might be able to get my real info through my vat number

Just make sure you do not use the same VAT number across several EB accounts.
