Yes they can do, but only soft checks

Like JamesNorth says. They are more electronic verification you exist where you say you do rather than credit checks. The checks for all the savings accounts I have have never shown on my credit file, even if I ONLY have a savings account with them and no Current or Basic account.

Must be really soft checks in that case, as I've never had Savers Accounts show up on the credit file either. First time I've thought about it, in all honesty.
Knowing how ruthless UK laws can be, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd change it in couple of years time just to have even more information about your average Joe Blows.
Gives them more data to work with.

This is not scaremongering, just thinking out loud.
