Ebay's new "Product review" feature...
 

Once again ebay manages to make another useless feature..
They recently made a product review page where you can rate products 1 to 5, like amazon.

Unfortunately, I have a competitor selling the same item and because they have had a bad rating, it has been associated with my item! So now the rating is 1 out of 5 because of another seller!

Should I complain about this? This is a really stupid feature...

If you complain, they probably would just take it onboard as feedback.

But ebay IS following in the footsteps of Amazon here.

Amazon too has a review system, which has made it one of the most successful business' on the planet! So I doubt ebay will ditch it anytime soon.

On this side of the pond, you can easily disable product reviews in your account settings so they don't show up.

Maybe it's the same in UK? I would bet so...

Yes, I thought it would stick around..
It's just that it looks real bad when your product has only 1 rating which is 1 star, even though that was another seller's fault!

If you dont manage to disable it, just change the product number on your listing so it no longer corresponds to that product (I think ebay refer to it as EAN, just mark the number as 'does not apply').

If you go on 'Account' on the my ebay page and click site preferences, you should see the option available to you. It's not changing for me for some reason though... stays stuck at 'yes' when I chose no at least 5 times.

Also these steps wont necessarily work for other ebay platforms, as they may slightly differ. Worth a try though

They sure are!
I asked online chat and managed to get it to work after i cleared my cookies and cache.

However, they told me that by 6th May, product reviews are compulsory. Just a heads up..

So why on earth would they include an option to disable it when next month its compulsory and its only been out for a while!!!

Anyway, I guess you should do what I said above about EAN.

I know...really pointless.
I already have it as 'does not apply' on EAN :(
Somehow, they associated the product with mine. Maybe it's something else in item specifics or the listing name?

The whole "product review" feature is still really buggy, I guess because it's still relatively new. I've never disabled them on any of my accounts. I actually learned about that tip here but I've never used it.

I've noticed some of my listings will sometimes have 100's of reviews then a few days later the review section will be blank for those same listings. Or sometimes it will go from having a bunch of reviews to only one or two.

Anyway for when they do become mandatory, I have a bit of advice which may be useful. If you have a lot of reviews on a listing, you can move bad reviews down the list by marking them as "unhelpful." That way you have some control over the 5 reviews visible to buyers by default.

There must be something linking listings to ratings.

Let the stealth guru's begin thinking what this linking is caused by... we might need a new ebook for this now :)
