Does Paypal name have to match bank account name?

Hi, tried to send money yesterday and it was sent as an e-cheque. Paypal emailed me saying this:

Dear ___

On 4 Dec 2012, we attempted to transfer ** GBP from your bank account, ending in 0229. This transfer was returned by your bank on 10 Dec 2012 for the reason below:

The bank is disputing the Direct Debit Instruction (DDI).

As a result, this bank account has been removed from your PayPal account. Please contact your bank for more information or add a new bank account. Please do not contact PayPal because this is entirely an issue between the account holder and their bank.

Yours sincerely,

PayPal

What does it mean? Never had it before. I've read that they do this if the name doesn't match between Paypal and the bank account name, yet my account is stealth so it won't match?

Thanks!

it basically means paypal have tried to take a DD for money from your bank (for whatever reason)

it will have been because the names dont match

doesnt matter for funds going into the account as they dont see the names

the other way round can and does cause problem

Barclays...it's a savings account...first time i've used a savings account as well

AKasper 12-11-2012 07:44 AM

Thankfully, it's let me re-add the same bank account. I really need to pay for something before christmas...How can I do it through this account? any ideas without the same happening again?

Leave enough money in PP so they dont have to go looking to your bank for funds.

Why not get a current account quickly and make sure DD is enabled?

AKasper 12-11-2012 05:33 PM

The current account associated with it was already used years ago and was taken down by paypal :(

Then it has nothing to do with names mismatch.

Savers often do not work.

Are you sure? Because I can withdraw money into it, just taking it from the bank account and into PP account is the problem. Plus, it let me sign up with PP with the savings card and there was never any issue?
Hmmm...

Use a vcc to pay for what ever it is you want to pay for.

Thanks for the tip Tiz- never thought of that. Does it work if your names don't match on Paypal and on the VCC?
I tried to pay it off using a debit card which I added to the account, usually they don't check to see if the names match, but it wouldn't be accepted because the names didn't match.
Is this a new thing brought in by paypal that all names have to match to transfer money from an account to paypal?

I doubt it was because the names didn't match as they do not see the name on the card, only the card number, expiry date and cvv.

If it failed it would be because it did not pass AVS i.e. it was not registered to the postal address you used on the account

Not sure what AVS is but the addresses won't match anyway cos it's a stealth account.

It actually says on paypal that the names of the paypal account and bank account have to match for money to be transferred successfully. Maybe it's a new barclays policy to protect customers from people using their card? :noidea:

Address Verification System

Using the right type of vcc overcomes the need for name and address matching.

Using your bank issued debit or credit card will never work with a fully stealth address.
