Try sipgate. You can get a number that's local to you, i.e. an 0203 number if London, 0117 if Bristol, etc. It's free. There is even a softphone given that is configured with your details.

I did say to not abuse!!! This is why I am hesitant to share more suggestions/ideas on here.

Each telephone number (that we offer for free) actually costs money. I don't want to name names, but one person opened 35 accounts! Why do you need that many??? Will be removing duplicates soon, when I find time.

So..... despite the hassles I face (particularly with the limiting of the only PP/EB account I've used for the past 8 years), I am beginning to think if this is representative of sellers, then maybe PP/EB have got it right and that they should actually be more stringent with checks.

Just get an O2 pay and go SIM card and stick it in an old mobile, you don't have to top it up for it to receive calls

Good to know UKdirect - heard of some issues with O2 on the dongle side (but I wont digress)
