Linking UK bank account to UK paypal names must match?

I have been searching the forums and it seems to be a whole array of answers to this question:

Does name on bank account and paypal account has to match for withdrawals and verification to work?
  • Some people say that it has to be 100% match
  • others say that you can change few letters
  • also people say it does not have to match as paypal cannot check it
  • also people say that only surname has to match

what is the real upto date answer to this?

Any help would be appreciated.

It really depends on the bank. Some will allow different names or name mismatches and some will not. There are quite a few threads on here where members report which banks have been known to accept different names or name mismatches.

The issue is what bank you select for your new stealth accounts.

What bank is it?

At the moment I have 2 freshly opened bank accounts:

Santander current account and Marks & Spencer current account

If there is serious incentive I can open other banks too fairly quickly.

Any help about these 2 particular banks would be appreciated.

p.s. I think the M&S bank is serviced by HSBC so it should have same rules as HSBC?

Certainly as of about six months ago both Santander and HSBC were fine for stealth with completely mis-matching names. Can't comment on whether M&S have same rules as HSBC, would be interested to know.

It would be great to save a regularly updated "sticky" detailing all known bank accounts and which of these accepted PP Direct Debits...? Just a thought!

HSBC and Santander are fine for mismatched names. I have a girls name on my first ever one going into one of these banks and im a bloke!

Yes OK it was my first stealth - I havent adopted that since... try and slightly adjust your name to make it different will make life easier should any questions come up from the bank

A few of the answers are correct, its down to personal prefence or what you know.

Personally i like to keep my last name and use a veriation of my first name keeping the first letter.

thats what works best for me in making a solid PP accounts
